Campfire Series Part 3: The Night of the Most Desperate Question
Luke 15:11-31
The most desperate question many people ask is, "Can I even go back?" Like the prodigal son, we often believe we must earn our way back to God after we've failed. Yet in Jesus' story, the father doesn't demand proof of change—he welcomes his son home with open arms.
Both the younger and older sons shared the same misunderstanding. The younger son thought he had done too much wrong and needed to earn his place back. The older son thought he had done everything right and deserved more. Both were trapped in a performance mindset.
God is not keeping score or waiting for us to fix ourselves before coming to Him. Whether you've been running from God or exhausting yourself trying to earn His approval, the invitation is the same: come home. You don't clean yourself up to come home—you come home to get cleaned up. God's grace is a gift, not something we earn.
Next Steps:
1. Come home to God today instead of waiting until you have everything together.
2. Stop trying to prove yourself worthy of a grace that has always been freely given.
Discussion Question:
Why do you think so many people, after making mistakes, ask "Can I even go back?" instead of "How do I fix it?"
