“Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content.”
PHILIPPIANS 4:11.

PONDER THIS
What is contentment? Contentment is an inner sufficiency that keeps us at peace despite outward circumstances. In the New Testament, the word contentment has the idea of being self-contained. While in the Philippian jail, Paul said: “I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content” (Philippians 4:11 The idea means, “I’m self-contained; I don’t have to look at circumstances to find my peace.” When the space shuttle goes up, they put everything on board that people are going to need because there’s no 7-Eleven in the neighborhood up there. It is self-contained, it has everything on board. In the same way, Christians have this self-containment. To be clear, this is not at all because we can find what we need in ourselves, but because the Spirit of God has come to live within us. Our contentment is found in Him.
• How have you experienced the “self-contained” contentment that is found in relationship with Jesus?
• What does it look like to seek contentment in your circumstances instead of in something else that is passing away?

PRACTICE THIS
Take a walk today to prayerfully consider where you find your contentment. Ask God to lead you to seek contentment in Him alone.

These are the funeral arrangements for Brother Eddie Smith. He will be missed by so many. To know Eddie was one of the greatest blessings this side of heaven. He truly loved the Lord with all his heart and had true, unwavering love for those he came in touch with. You were truly blessed if Brother Eddie called you his friend. Eddie led a life as one of the best examples of Christ I've ever witnessed. In the words of Eddie, "Do you know the Lord Jesus Christ?" That was Eddie's main purpose in life: to see those lost come to a point and place of salvation. As Eddie said before he went home to heaven, "I'll be waiting on y'all." So long for a little while, my friend! You will be greatly missed by so many.

“And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.”
LUKE 24:27

PONDER THIS
The Old Testament, without the Lord Jesus Christ, would be a dead-end road leading to nowhere. And yet, as you take a step back and look at the whole Bible, you see Jesus everywhere.
An artist took the Constitution of the United States, and he painted the letters very carefully and shaded each letter. Once he was done, as you looked at the Constitution of the United States of America, you could read it as the framers intended it to be, but if you stepped back and looked at it, you would see that the artist had so shaded the letters that there was a portrait of George Washington. That’s how we read the Old Testament in relation to Jesus. You’ll find all the laws and ceremonies and practices, but as you step back, there He is: Jesus the Son of God.
• What are some ways you have seen Jesus throughout the Old Testament?
• How do these things give you further confidence in who He is?

PRACTICE THIS
Take time today to look up some examples of practices or accounts in the Old Testament that point to Jesus either directly or indirectly.

Certainty? Certainly!

That you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed.
Luke 1:4

True faith does not ignore the evidence; it responds to it. Dr. John C. Lennox, the famous Irish mathematician and scientist, said, “Faith is not a leap in the dark; it’s the exact opposite. It’s a commitment based on evidence.” Take the story of Simon Greenleaf, for example. He was a Harvard law professor who spent many hours studying the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He wanted to determine if the evidence could stand up in a courtroom.

The result? He ended up giving his life to Christ.

Believing in spite of the evidence isn’t faith. Faith is believing because we have evidence. Some of that evidence is personal to us. As we see God keeping His promises to us, our faith grows. The One who was with us yesterday will be with us tomorrow. He has been our help in ages past, and He is our hope for years to come. Take a look at God’s care for you, and trust Him with your cares today.

God is not an alternative to science as an explanation…. He is the ground of all explanation: it is His existence which gives rise to the very possibility of explanation, scientific or otherwise.
John C. Lennox
