WHY WE HIDE THE THINGS WE HATE MOST ABOUT OURSELVES

Picture a kid with acne so bad he couldn't look in the mirror unless the light was really dim. Bright department-store mirrors made him see what he really looked like, and he hated it. He put it simply: "I actually preferred the darkness."

Most of us have felt that way spiritually. We stand in the light of Jesus, see things in our lives that are ugly, and we hate what we see.

That's why so many of us prefer the darkness. The darkness hides what we don't want other people to see. In John 3:19-20, Jesus said people "loved darkness instead of light" and won't come into the light "for fear that their deeds will be exposed."

Hiding comes with a danger: ugly things always grow in the dark. If you don't believe it, go home and look behind your refrigerator, or down your bathtub drain.

Whatever the light of Jesus is revealing in your life right now, a secret you've been keeping or something you've been hiding, bring it into the light. Confess it to Jesus, and find a Christian friend you trust and can confide in.

His light doesn't just reveal who we really are. It reveals the way for us to become who He always created us to be.
