For nearly 30 years, the Dorcas Guild at St. John has given women an opportunity to serve their Lord through their time and talents. The Dorcas Guild was formed in 1997 as a local unit of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. Its name comes from Dorcas, a woman in Acts 9 who was known for doing good and helping those in need.
For one longtime member, the story goes back even further. She remembers joining St. John with her young family in 1964, when the St. John LWML met each month in the evening. The group’s annual Turkey Supper and Bazaar was well known throughout the community. As the years passed, some members began talking about forming a group that could meet during the day. In 1997, that vision became a reality with the formation of the Dorcas Guild.
Since then, countless St. John women have served through the Guild, creating handmade quilts and other items, supporting mission projects and finding new ways to give back to the church and community. Hundreds of quilts have been donated to organizations including Lutheran World Relief, Abba’s House and Star of Hope.
Recently, the Dorcas Guild gathered to pray over the quilts and other handmade items. Each piece represents women using what God has given them to bless others. Through the Dorcas Guild, God continues to work through generations of women who are willing to serve. They are helping connect others to the true riches found in Jesus! God at work.
