Proverbs 30

5 Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. 6 Do not add to His words, lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar.

This passage has long been one of great value to me personally. God's word is "pure" as in refined in the way that one melts down precious metals so as to remove all impurities.

It is no wonder that there is a caution for anyone to "add" to His word, because that would add impurities into something which is pure. It would also cause to bring error and a rebuke from God who is the author of His pure work.

What often gets missed is the part where it says of those, "who put their trust in Him". When people quote this passage it often looks like this:

Every word of God is pure; Do not add to His words,
Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar.

It is still a true statement, but Solomon adds the truth of a blessing to those who trust Him and His word. He is a shield, as in a protection, a defence, to those who trust Him. Which means by trusting Him and his word we are made safe to follow where He leads, because He said so. Gone would be the need to lean to our own understanding, as Solomon mentions in Proverbs 3. Since we cannot know and direction, from moment to moment, it should come as great comfort to know He has spoken and He leads those who need leading.

What we also have here and now, in the person of Jesus, is The Word made flesh (John 1:1-14) and what He reveals is a shield and a defence that Solomon could have only hoped to know when he wrote such proverbs. We have the final word from God to man, when God came to us and made it possible to be reconciled to God through His Son.

There is much more here, and we will look at these passages further this morning. You can join us at 8:30 or 10:00 A.M. PST, or we Live Stream our services from the link below.

Proverbs 29 has some very familiar themes from earlier chapters and we have covered them in previous weeks. There are two verses, however, which when taken together say a very profound thing, though what they teach is obvious.

Here are the two passages:

Verse 2 When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when a wicked man rules, the people groan.

AND

Verse 18 Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but happy is he who keeps the law.

The relationship between these two is obvious, but the English fails to capture an important matter of the text. Most of us have heard this quoted, usually connected to politics when it comes to verse 2. The thought is a righteous vs a wicked politician. That is true, and has application, but what is meant here in the original language is not of an individual, but the "righteous" speaks of the people as a whole. If the people are righteous and their leaders are too, there is cause for rejoicing.

Keep in mind, Solomon writes as a king of Israel, and this would have application for his nation for generations. It was intended for his nation, but has obvious application universally. Notice he mentions keeping The Law. That is God's written direction, intended to guide them. God's word gives the standard and measure of what God sees as "righteous" if it is followed, and "wicked" if ignored. History gives countless examples of this truth.

Now look at verse 18. The "revelation" is the communication which God gave to His people. From Solomon's perspective, there was the direction of The Law, but God gave revelation during and after his times, directly, in a number of ways. The observation which played out in their history was this, if God did not communicate, people would cast off restraint. There would be no restraining of human emotion or action, if mankind were left to their own devices and passions. Any simple examination of human history can see the sad truth of Solomon's words played out.

Fast forward to our times. God has communicated and given direction, far above what Solomon could have imagined. The problem today is not that God has not revealed things, but rather that man chooses to ignore what has been revealed. The "righteous" vs. "wicked" actions of the people can be seen in this nation, as well as world wide.

This should come as no surprise, Jesus said as much, as did other NT writers. People, by nature, reject any governing authority when it comes to their desires. Regardless of what God has said, they never take the time to see if He addresses a matter, or if they are in line with His will. It is why scripture speaks of a spiritual re-birth and a change of nature, which only God can provide to those willing to come to Him, on His terms. The end result remains the same, as Proverbs 29:18 can be observed at all times, for all nations, regardless of when.

Proverbs 27

17 As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.

This is a commonly used passage when it comes to the biblical understanding of an interaction between people of faith. Its meaning is pretty simple, a face to face meeting between people has the resulting effect of sharpening, in a good way. We might say seeing someone, who is of a good character, makes us better for having seen and been around them. We all have those friends who make us better, or can make us worse, strictly speaking of character and conduct. They elevate you, or bring you down. Either way, there is an influence.

In a New Testament sense, the same holds true. The interaction between people in the church should have the same result. Of course the church is a corporate entity, made up of individual believers, with what should be common beliefs and values.

Fast forward to our day and age. Solomon's words, if applied to the modern church, should mean something along these lines. The result of interaction between brothers and sisters in the church should cause us to sharpen our edge, as in not being dull to the world around us. Our senses, our outward (and inward) lives should reflect our beliefs. Face to face fellowship with others of like faith, assuming they too are sharp, has that desired effect. The reverse is also possible, so the biblical admonition is for each person to be devout, and careful, while being mindful to encourage one another. The world will not do this for us, it is hostile towards what we believe, so this is an in-house matter. That doesn't mean we detach ourselves from the world, we are to engage it, and show it hope in Jesus.

We look at this much closer today and hope you can join us. We meet at 8:30 or 10:00 A.M. PST. We Live Stream from the link below.

Proverbs 25

2 It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter.

Think of how much more that could be added to this verse from the time Solomon wrote these words. There is nothing wrong or incomplete in them, from his time on earth, it was absolute truth in his day. Fast forward 3000 years to our time and we can speak volumes of what God has revealed, and to whom, since Solomon's day.

In his time, Israel was led by a king, and God gave direct council on matters concerning Israel. God gave prophets to the nation and it was The Lord who guided the people, and their king, as long as they were willing to hear and obey. God would give direction, often with warnings if the people would rebel, and promise of blessing if they did as He instructed.

1000 years later Jesus would come and walk among His creation. He would tell, in great detail, of things to come. He would further give the promise that The Holy Spirit would reveal things, even after He left the earth. That promise was kept, in grand fashion, through the writings of the Apostles, as God further revealed matters. The marvelous truth is to the believer, all believers, would be able to know these things, since they are preserved in His word. Entire books of the New Testament are put there to reveal things future. Others are given so we can know how we are to conduct our lives here and now, as we await His return.

Let us look again at the verse in Proverbs.

"It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter."

It is for God alone to know the end of a matter. However, He now gives direction to the believer, everywhere, and at all times. Whether it is things to come, they are written. If it is matters of conduct and belief, they too are written. If it is for our day to day lives, we need not wait for direction to be given to a king, we have them given directly, by the Holy Spirit.
