Discernment is not a gut feeling. That comes from the soul.
Discernment scripturally is a spiritual muscle that is trained and shaped in order to recognize what is from God and what is from man.
When we say “I discerned” we are almost always wrong.
What we should say instead is “I felt uncomfortable with that...” or “I don’t like what I heard/saw”.
Godly discernment is all about fruit and heart, not outward appearances and preferences.
Godly discernment takes time and training. Hebrews 5:14 says “But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil” (NIV)
Godly discernment does not judge by appearances. John 7:24 says “Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly” (NIV).
Instead of assuming our preferences are proper discernment, Lord, let us be the ones who diligently get trained in order to rightly distinguish good from evil.
Enjoying the journey with you,
Les
