Ash Wednesday (Feb. 18) is about more than gloom and doom. We were made and blessed by God, to extend that blessing into the world. But death crashes in. Darkness creeps alongside us. We can't always access the joy and light. And we can't do it on our own. So it is important to name it. To say, yes, we -- even we -- need help and we look to the one who knows us, names us, heals us, and strengthens us. We confess that we are human so that we can become even more human. We become vulnerable so that we might be made strong. Shoulder to shoulder, we turn to God who drags us into the light, that God's blessing might shine even brighter.
