Sunday Eucharist - 10:00 AM A HISTORY OF ST. LUKE'S

St. Later that year St. Rev.

Luke's first Eucharist was one evening in January, 2004 in the lobby of Twiford Law office in Moyock. There were just six of us there, with word there were others who were unable to attend. It was agreed we did want to form a parish in Currituck and commenced meeting Wednesday evening in homes. Katharine Drexel Roman Catholic Church graciously invited us to use their beautiful church and we were a

ble to move from Wednesday to Sunday evenings – 5:00PM, and a year later, to a morning hour – 11:00AM. On February 10, 2006, with most of St. Luke’s congregation present, by unanimous vote, and a standing ovation, our Currituck Fellowship was admitted as an official Mission of the Diocese of East Carolina at the annual Diocesan Convention. In time, the Roman Catholic Church needed the 11:00 hour and asked St. Luke’s to return to the Sunday 5PM time slot. This was the year 2008, the year we had an average Sunday attendance of 32, the highest we have ever had. Believing evening worship would be counterproductive, a search began for another space. Beginning Christmas Eve 2008, after four years with the Roman Catholics, our Sunday worship moved to a rented house located in Sligo on the main Currituck highway which provided room for a chapel. In 2013 there was an opportunity to purchase a former restaurant from a bank on a distress sale. We stepped out in faith and bought it. Remodeled, we are now in our own church in Currituck, North Carolina. Our first worship service was March 9, 2014, with all renovations completed in December, 2015. Our first rector, Fr. Jim McGee, retired in June 2016 at the age of 87, and The Rt. David Bane, formerly of the Diocese of Southern Virginia, has been our celebrant since June 2016.

The smallest things
God works with the smallest things. So often, that which is almost imperceptible can point us to the holy. The small and the mundane can lead to our understanding the heart of a mystery. The Kingdom of Heaven is like this. A paradox that a bounty that is born from the tiniest of offerings: a seed, yeast, a pearl, a single net in the wide ocean. It is those places within us, within our hearts and souls, where the Holy Spirit transforms the tiny into overwhelming grace.
The Right Rev. Sarah K. Fisher, Bishop
