The day after Labor Day, Josh Torrance spoke an original, riveting, multi-layered poem about ‘How every penny matters’ which tied perfectly into the our discussion of labor and riches. Traditionally, being rich is defined by how much we are able to spend, but in the economy of God, being rich is defined by how much we are able to give.

Tonight Rick led the group through the pondering of Ecclesiastes—what is the meaning of life? And why are do find ourselves often smacking head first into the twin perils of loneliness and meaninglessness. G.K. Chesterton, “Meaninglessness does not come from a weariness of pain; meaninglessness comes from a weariness of pleasure.”

Ultimately, the musings of Ecclesiastes concludes, “here is the conclusion of the matter:
Fear God and keep his commandments,
for this is the duty of all mankind.”

We talked about all the kings in 2 Kings. 17 of them Toal. Only four righteous. But of those four, three had an asterisk to their reign—they did not tear down the high place. They allowed the worship of God to cohabitate with the worship of idols.

The high place was constructed by King Solomon who was a righteous man. He too had an asterisk. He built the Temple for worship but left room in his heart for lust embodied by the high place. And this practice of cohabitation cursed the generations of kings.

The last righteous king was Josiah. While renovating the Temple, the high priest found the law of God and handed to King Josiah. He read it and his heart was pricked to the core. He utterly destroyed the high place—all its priests and worshippers. True worship in the Temple must be established on the obedience of His Word.

The group has had some awesome events and opportunities the past weeks. Here’s a quick breakdown: day of fasting and prayer with Venture 20/30s in the Santa Cruz mountains; Tuesday group night discussing father and the importance of not only being a provider but a pursuer as well—pursue and be present so your kids can receive attention, admiration, and assurance; last Tuesday group we did Word and Waterfall at Castle Rock; and tonight we ministered at CityTeam—Nicole led the worship team and Justys preached and included Adam to share his baptism story. Good times!
