On Maundy Thursday, Jesus told his disciples: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” (John 13:34)

It’s from this command that Maundy Thursday gets its name (‘Maundy’ actually means “mandate” in Latin). Only the God of love could mandate that we love one another. And only the God of love who gave himself for us could empower us to fulfill this command.

If you want to journey with Jesus tonight from the table to the garden to the betrayal, might we suggest the EP “Betrayed by a Kiss” featuring “The Table (Break Bread)”, “Not My Will But Yours Be Done”, and “Betrayed by a Kiss”? Sure, we’re biased—it’s written and recorded by our worship leader and co-founder Joel Rhodes-Karahadian. But it’s also beautiful.

We hope it will bless you on this Maundy Thursday as you get to inhabit the story of Jesus through music.

Today is Palm Sunday, which marks the day Jesus entered Jerusalem, his face set toward the cross. Though it's called the "Triumphal Entry," the tension of all that the week holds is already evident in Luke 19:41-42.

Referring to Jesus, Luke writes: "As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, 'If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes."

If you want to enter into the journey of Jesus as he makes his way to the cross, and all that happens next, try reading along with one text a day, starting with the Triumphal Entry today. Whether you are someone who follows Jesus and want to immerse yourself in this familiar story, or someone who is curious about what people all around the world celebrate as Holy Week, join us as we read this true story that changes everything.

Feel free to DM us or comment with any questions or observations, and we'd love to have you come on Sunday April 5 at 4:15pm as we look at the passage in the gospel of John that shares the reason for the hope that we have.

Easter is all about celebrating the new life that is found in Jesus, and the hope that brings—but hope can almost sound tone deaf when there is so much hardship in the world.

Easter can answer important questions for us, questions like:
• how do we hold onto hope in the midst of hard times, pain, brokenness, and injustice—both in our own lives, and in the world around us?
• how is Christianity different from toxic positivity?
• how does the hope that is found in Jesus help us to fully feel the turmoil within us and around us—and at the same time, also empower us enter into the broken spaces without being overcome by darkness?

This Easter Sunday, come join the people of West Valley Neighborhood Church as we (re)discover the hope that is found in Jesus being raised to life. Easter tells us that brokenness doesn't get to have the last word—because hope is also holding onto us.

After the service, we're gathering outdoors for a community meal with our favorite local food truck, Zaida's Kitchen, serving authentic Mexican Oaxacan cuisine (100% gluten-free!). Expect tamales and empanadas and Mexican wedding cookies, and warm people who are interested in hearing your story. Set to the background track of a large game of Jenga clattering in the background...

New to church? Not to worry. We like to explain our service as we go so everyone can join in if they want.

Have questions? Hit us up. We know that going anywhere for the first time can be hard, and stepping foot inside a church building can be much harder. So if there are any questions we can answer to help pave the way to our doorstep, we’d be happy to. We’d love to have you!

We had so much fun bringing back our monthly Open Air Open Mic (indoor edition) after a brief winter hibernation. And while we are bummed that we couldn’t find the original version of “Make Your Own Kind of Music” on IG 🎶, we are NOT bummed that people were ready and willing to sing a long when the time came! See you (and hear you) next month on Saturday April 11 at 7pm! Depending on the weather, we might be outside in the open air on the patio, or in this cozy indoor lounge space…we’ll see! And you can also feel free to make your own kind of poetry/dance/comedy/story and more!

Looking for something fun and low-key to do this weekend? Come check out one of our favorite local community-builders, our Open Mic, this SATURDAY March 14th from 7-8:30pm.

After hibernating for the winter, we’re back in action and we can’t wait! So far sign-ups include a couple sets from two singer-songwriters with original songs, and a dancer. Maybe more to come!

We’ll provide the snacks, seltzers, and a safe space to meet new people and enjoy local artists. You bring yourself, canned goods to benefit the West Valley Community Services food pantry, and anyone else who you think might enjoy this space!

We’re meeting on the campus of West Valley Neighborhood Church at 6191 Bollinger Rd in Cupertino, in McHattie Hall (the building with the second tallest roof on campus; there will be a different event going on in the sanctuary on Saturday night). Follow our A-Frame signs for the OPEN MIC into McHattie Hall into the cozy lounge space. Can’t wait to see you there!

Hey neighbors! So, it's almost mid-Feb. already. January was...A LOT. If you're ready to take a deep breath and attempt to reset, or if you came into the new year with the hope or intention of building community, making new friends, exploring faith, giving back, and/or having fun, check out what's on tap the rest of this month with WVNC.

What you might not know is that we have a super welcoming community forming here. Any time you come to one of our gatherings, you'll find that other people are delighted that you're there! Because we know that this project of building a community that is warmly welcoming to all takes all of us, and takes more of us. And people are there because they want to meet people too, and if you're not there, they can't meet you. But if you are there, they can!

So make sure to check out our Events page on our website .org/events to find out the deets for each of these upcoming gatherings, such as the location for our community service project this Wednesday. Hint: it's not on the church campus, but it IS in Cupertino!! We'd love to see you there!

When we gather for worship, we love having kids in the service with us. The adults can learn from the freedom that kids bring to musical worship in particular, and the kids can learn from the music and liturgy and seeing what it's like when the family of God comes together! Kids over 4 will be stay with us in the service.

This Sunday, we're also glad to be able to provide an option for our littlest littles to be invested in by loving and caring adults who have been background-checked and trained on safety, and who love to share the love of Jesus with our youngest friends!

Please register by emailing [email protected] with the name(s) and age(s) of the littles who will be joining us during our 4:15pm worship service. Drop off starts at 4pm, and pick up will immediately follow the service, prior to the community meal.

Those who want to keep their littles with them in the service are welcome to do so!
