"Truth on Trial"

Dear Saints of Valley Church,

Few things are more frustrating than knowing that truth is being twisted.

When someone misrepresents your words or only tells the part of the story that serves them, something within you burns. It feels deeply wrong because truth deeply matters.

In Mark 14:53-65, Jesus stands in the middle of a trial where the truth is twisted and finally condemned. But Mark shows us that this is not merely a trial about Jesus. When the Savior is judged, truth itself is on trial. Which means this passage we’ll consider on Sunday isn’t just about “What did they do to Jesus?” but “What do we do when the truth challenges us?”

Come join Valley Church this Sunday as we worship the Savior who loves us enough to speak the truth. Let us listen to the truth of his Word together, sing to one another the truths of his worthiness, and encourage one another as we seek to follow Jesus together.

By His strength and for His glory,
Craig Shigyo

"When Confidence Collapses"

Dear Saints of Valley Church,

In 1948, the Chicago Daily Tribune was so confident Thomas Dewey had defeated Harry Truman that it printed the headline, “Dewey Defeats Truman.” Nearly every poll was predicting Dewey’s victory. Truman’s approval ratings were deeply low. So, a Dewey victory seemed inevitable. By morning, the headline had become an infamous lesson in false confidence: Truman had won. Sometimes the confidence that sounds strongest at night looks very different by morning.

In Mark 14:26-52, Jesus’s disciples begin the night with confidence: “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” But before morning, their confidence collapses into abandonment. How did confidence turn into abandonment? And if it happened to them, could their weakness also be our weakness?

This Sunday, we’ll consider the weakness that causes confidence to collapse into abandonment, and why willingness alone is not the same as strength to endure. But we’ll also see where true strength is found: Jesus’s faithfulness supplies what our weakness lacks.

Come join Valley Church this Sunday as we worship the Savior whose strength supplies what our weakness lacks. Let us depend on him as we listen to his Word together, sing to one another of his glorious mercy (we will be singing Yet Not I But Christ in Me and Thank You Jesus for the Blood), and encourage one another to find our strength in him as we seek to follow Jesus together.

By His strength and for His glory,

"The Meal You Don’t Want to Miss"

Dear Saints of Valley Church,

Some of the best meals aren’t really about the food. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love good-tasting food. But some of the most satisfying meals in my memory were about the company, the celebration, or the fellowship.

In Mark 14:12-26, Jesus prepares a meal that’s not merely about eating, but about belonging to him. The question that runs through these verses is surprisingly personal: Will we receive what Jesus offers, or remain near his table while still refusing him?

But that’s not the only meal we get to enjoy on Sunday. Make sure you plan to stay after church from 12:00-2:00pm for the all-church picnic! We’ll have an assortment of franks, sausages, and even vegan hot dog options. And parents, please bring swimsuits and towels for your kids, since we will have two inflatable water slides on the lawn. If you can sign up and pay beforehand with this link: https://valleychurch.ccbchurch.com/goto/forms/910/responses/new, that will help us out.

"What Determines How You Live?"

Dear Valley Church Family,

Imagine holding a compass in one hand and a piece of driftwood in the other. A compass follows a fixed point no matter the conditions around it. Driftwood simply moves wherever the current pushes it.

The same is true in our lives. Everyone is guided by something. It may be an unchanging truth beyond themselves—like true north on a compass—or the ever-shifting currents of culture, comfort, and personal feelings.

This Sunday, we’ll look at Mark 14:1–11 and see very different responses to Jesus. Mary pours out an incredibly costly perfume because she sees Jesus as infinitely worthy. Judas values money more. The religious leaders value comfort and control more. And in the middle of it all stands Jesus, willingly pouring Himself out for us in love.

What we believe Jesus is worth will ultimately shape how we live. Looking forward to opening God’s Word and worshipping together Sunday.

In Christ,
John Mack

"The Day the Normal Stopped"

Dear Saints of Valley Church,

How many of us live with a basic assumption: “Tomorrow will basically look like today.” We expect to have the same types of routines, make the same types of plans, and live in the same type of world. But then, the normal gets interrupted. Maybe it’s a phone call, a diagnosis, a text alert, or a news headline that changes everything.

In Mark 13, Jesus prepares his disciples for a world where “normal” won’t last forever, as he talks about the final judgment, when he will return from heaven in power and glory as judge over all creation. Maybe you don’t think much about how everything is going to end, because it’s just easier to assume that tomorrow will always look like today. Or maybe you’re prone to worrying about whether the recent headlines or current existential crisis might signal the coming end.

Instead, Jesus does something surprising. When his disciples ask when the end will come, Jesus focuses far more on how they should live while they wait. Rather than calling his followers to panic or speculation, Jesus calls them to hopeful watchfulness.

This Sunday, come join Valley Church as we worship the Savior who died, rose, ascended, and will return in power and glory! Come rejoice in his hopeful promises as we listen to His Word together, sing to one another of his amazing grace, and encourage one another with the hope of his promised return as we follow Jesus together.

By His strength and for His glory,
Craig Shigyo

"Is “Not Fake” the Same as Faithful?"

Dear Saints of Valley Church,

We all recognize there’s a difference between food that is “not fake” and food that is actually nutritious. A can of soda may contain real sugar, a pint of ice cream may use natural ingredients, and butter may be minimally processed, so tasty, and yet not high on the food pyramid. We could tell ourselves that we’re eating healthy because we’re eating “real food,” but “not fake” does not automatically guarantee giving your body what it really needs.

What if the same is true when it comes to our devotion to God? In a world rightly suspicious of religious hypocrisy, it is easy to think sincerity is enough. But what if avoiding fake devotion is not the same thing as offering true devotion? We may not be pretending. We may not be trying to impress anyone. But in Mark 12:38-44, Jesus presses deeper: Does our devotion actually give anything? Does it cost anything? Or does it mostly stay convenient and self-protective?

Come join Valley Church this Sunday as we worship the Savior who is truly worthy of our costly devotion, as we sit under His Word together, sing to one another of his glorious mercy (we will be singing Yet Not I But Christ in Me and Blessed Assurance), and encourage one another to find our all-satisfying joy in Him as we seek to follow Jesus together.

By His strength and for His glory,
Craig Shigyo

"The Danger of Underestimation"

Dear Saints of Valley Church,

One of the critical turning points in the American Revolutionary War came in the fall of 1777, when British General John Burgoyne marched south, expecting to seize control of the Hudson River.

But Burgoyne severely underestimated the strength of the American militia. Instead of isolating the New England colonies through his campaign, his own army was isolated, surrounded, and forced to surrender nearly 6,000 men at Saratoga.

Sometimes the most revealing moment in a conflict is not when someone launches the attack, but when it becomes clear how badly they have underestimated what they are up against.

That’s what we see in Mark 12:13-37, as one group after another comes to test and trap Jesus. But what if every trap thrown at him only proves how much they underestimate King Jesus? And what does their underestimation of Jesus actually expose about them, and about us?

This Sunday, come join Valley Church as we consider the unassailable Savior by sitting under God’s Word together, singing to one another of his trustworthiness (we will be singing Undivided Heart and Jesus Paid it All), and encouraging one another to trust him fully as we seek to follow Jesus together.

By His strength and for His glory,
Craig Shigyo

"The Pharisee Inside"

When I became a Christian as a senior in high school, I had a pretty radical conversion. Because I loved Jesus, I stopped drinking, smoking, and swearing. I broke all of my rock and roll vinyl records and only listened to Christian music – back in those days that meant bands like Stryper and Petra. I saw God do some amazing things in transforming my heart and my lifestyle. I started memorizing Scripture, sharing my love for God with friends and teammates, and encouraging them to change their lifestyles too.

But with all of that “success” in my personal life, I soon started to become judgmental of those around me who weren’t growing like I was. I started to look down on people who didn’t go to church three times a week like I did. Eventually that included those who didn’t read the Bible as much as I did, or the same version as me.

How did a change like that happen to such a nice boy like me? The answer is simple – pride. In Mere Christianity, CS Lewis defines pride as the "essential vice" and "utmost evil”, characterized as a competitive, anti-God state of mind that seeks pleasure only in being superior to others. What started so well took an ugly turn along the way. I had become a modern-day Pharisee.

This Sunday we’re going to read a parable in Mark 12:1-12 that Jesus tells against the religious leaders of the day… and they knew it. In story form, it describes their actions and God’s reactions to their prideful, judgmental, and sinful disobedience. But it also gives a beautiful sneak peek into God’s antidote for pride – the cornerstone - either you fall on it and are humbled, or it falls on you and crushes you.

The truth is we’ve all got a little Pharisee in us. It’s been nearly 50 years since I became a Christian and to be honest, I sometimes still struggle with competitive, self-righteousness, and judgmental feelings. In a word, pride. But by God’s grace I’m continuing to fall on Jesus Christ, the cornerstone of our faith.

By grace alone through faith alone,
Kurt

Don’t forget that the Discover Class (Room 3180) and Alpha class (Campus Center) both start this Sunday at 9:30 am. All are welcome.

Remember that this Sunday is our monthly Missions Lunch. We have three Global Partners ready to share via Zoom in the Campus Center. We’ll accept donations for lunch, but we want everyone to come.

"When Judgment Protects"

Dear Saints of Valley Church,

Last month, Trader Joe’s announced a massive recall of their frozen fried rice because of possible glass contamination. I was so thankful for the quick response of both the company and the USDA because our household is very much a Trader Joe’s household, and I quickly texted the notification to my wife!

When food is contaminated, we don’t want less scrutiny, we want more! We want someone to step in and protect people from harm. If something looks tasty but contains shards of glass, love requires exposure, not silence.

So why might it feel uncomfortable when Jesus does that with our worship?

In Mark 11:12-33, Jesus acts in ways many of us would not expect from a Savior. He confronts. He judges. And his severity forces a difficult question: How could a genuine savior judge worship so severely?

This Sunday, come join Valley Church as we consider the challenge from God’s Word together, sing to God who is worthy of our worship (we will be singing Only a Holy God and Cornerstone), and encourage one another as we seek to follow Jesus together. We will also have the particular joy of celebrating two baptisms this Sunday!

By His strength and for His glory,
Craig Shigyo

"Everything Rests on Easter"

Dear Saints of Valley Church,

What would it mean if Easter weren’t true? What if Jesus didn’t really rise from the dead?

Without resurrection certainty, Christianity becomes mere wishful thinking, and everything Christians trust in and hope for collapses. Christianity stands or falls on this all-important question: Did Jesus Christ rise from the dead?

In 1 Corinthians 15:1-11, Paul reminds us that the good news of Jesus Christ is only as strong as the resurrection on which it rests. If Christ has not risen from the dead, there is no solid ground beneath Christian faith. But if he has risen, then Easter is not a sentimental tradition, but the celebration of the decisive historical reality that gives us a certainty strong enough to hold fast to and build our lives upon.

This Friday, come join us for our Good Friday Service at 7 pm as we remember the reason behind the resurrection: Christ’s death on the cross for our sins. Come join us as we follow Jesus’s journey from his betrayal and denial, to the agony of Gethsemane, to his trial and verdict, to the cross and his burial.

Then, come celebrate on Sunday morning that Jesus has risen indeed!

9:30-10:00 am: Continental Breakfast in the campus center.
10:00-10:30 am: Easter Egg Hunt for children who are toddlers through 5th
10:45 am: worship gathering and Sunday school classes for all children, nursery through 5th
12:00 noon: Fellowship and treats on the patio.
Also, Valley Church Family, please help us prepare to hospitably receive our guests.

Please be praying that the Lord draws those who have been invited to join us this Sunday and opens their hearts to believe in the resurrected Lord!
Please help us prepare to welcome our guests by parking in the lot behind the Activities Center.
You are also welcome to join our elders and staff in our overflow room in the Campus Center during the Sunday gathering to make space for our guests in the sanctuary.
