Lemme tell y’all something, a church potluck ain’t just a meal. It’s an event. It’s the Super Bowl of casseroles. It’s a Baptist favorite sight.
As soon as you walk through those fellowship hall doors, you get smacked in the face with the trinity of smells: fried chicken, green beans, and fellowship.
And every church has the same folks:
Miss Brenda, who brings a macaroni dish so good it’ll make you thank God for your whole existence. Sister Kay, whose mystery casserole nobody touches because we all remember “The Incident of ’09.” And then there’s Brother Earl, who piles his plate like he ain’t ate since the Carter administration.
There are also a few church potluck rules:
You gotta brag on the food. You never take the last deviled egg unless you’re ready to fight. And you better label your dish, or folks will spend the next hour chasing you down asking, “Now who made this?”
My favorite part is the dessert table. It’s longer than most relationships. Pies, cakes, brownies, banana puddin, it’s almost as if a voice from Heaven said, “Let there be sugar.”
And when it’s all over, the preacher’ll say,
“Y’all take some leftovers home,” knowing good and well there ain’t gonna be a drop left except half a roll and a spoonful of something that’s a mystery mixture of beige and brown.
But you know what? We love it every time.
’Cause there ain’t nothing more comforting than good food, good folks, and a room full of people who’ll pray for you and judge your potato salad at the same time. Can I get an amen?
