Police Officer Gerard Carter, End of Watch, July 31st, 1998.

I will never forget. Many of us were still at the hospital, not long after midnight, when he lost his fight to live. I can see faces of the hospital staff, refusing suddenly to speak to, or even look at us; gathered there as one in hope and in love.

Continue to Rest in Peace and with Honor.

To many folks a Police Officer being killed passes through their lives much as any other news story. For those of us who worked with him and loved him, his shooting, his fight to live and his passing tore our guts out. The impact upon his family and loved ones was exponentially worse.

We remember him every day. We know from experience that many do not. Even among us, we cannot remember them all, there are way too many men and women who fell serving others.

I resolved to remember Gerry, and also those tragic days, and especially those who loved him. He was not just a uniform and shield to us.

Bless his memory; Bless his Family.
