This past Sunday, our Confirmation students attended worship at the Society of Saint John the Evangelist in Cambridge, MA. SSJE is an Episcopal community that is also home to a brotherhood of monks who live, work, and pastor together there. Our host for the day was Brother Luke, who shared with our group his story of becoming a monk and why he chose the monastic life. We learned about the power of making vows in our lives and of what it has meant to Brother Luke to choose poverty, chastity, and obedience as his way of following Jesus.

Throughout Confirmation our group has also attended services at various places across Rhode Island, giving us a chance to meet our neighbors in faith. From an Orthodox Jewish synagogue, to a Quaker Meeting House, to a Buddhist Zen Center, we are discovering the rich diversity of God's people! Coming up we will meet our Muslim neighbors at Masjid Al-Rahman in Pawtucket.

We give God thanks for the curious spirit and loving kindness of our Confirmation students!

Today is Holy Saturday, that day between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The day between death and resurrection. For many Christians, it is a day that passes almost without notice. We have already put one foot in Easter, as we get the eggs ready for the Big Hunt and iron the new shirt we plan to wear tomorrow.

We share this prayer from the Corrymeela Community in Northern Ireland as a reminder to ourselves not to rush this day away. To remember that grieving and silence are gifts of solidarity that God shares with us, so we might share them with each other. Let us pray today for the millions whose lives are literally hanging in the balance between life and death.

We need tables in our world today.
We need tables long and wide
that come with multiple leaves for
making the table longer and wider.
We need tables where the name tag
at our seat reads, Friend.
We need tables where bread is handed out
like a human body, muscular with love.
We need tables where the host refuses to start serving
until the greedy give up their seat
and the actual poor and hungry are gathered in.

Tonight, our Maundy Thursday service will take place at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary. Come take your seat at the table where Jesus is our host, our bread, and our friend.

This service combines moments of quiet, music, and sacred reading. Communion will be celebrated.
