Today, June 11, 2026, is the Feast Day of Saint Barnabas, known as an "Apostle of Encouragement.

Though not one of the 12 disciples, he is known as an apostle because he worked so closely with the disciples. His name was Joseph, but the disciples changed it to Barnabas, which St. Luke defines as “man of encouragement.”

St. Barnabas is most known for being the traveling companion of St. Paul in his journeys to establish Christian communities among people who were not Jewish.

When Paul (then known as Saul) first converted to Christianity, the other disciples were terrified and skeptical of him. Barnabas advocated for Paul, introduced him to the apostles, and vouched for his genuine change of heart.

Saint Barnabas died as a Christian martyr by being stoned to death in Salamis, Cyprus, around 61 AD. Enraged pagans and Jews incited an attack against him due to his fervent preaching of the Gospel.

Saint Barnabas, Apostle. Pray for us.

Please join with us tomorrow, May 23, 2026, at 10:00 p.m. for the Day of Pentecost worship.

The Lectionary for the day:

Acts 2:1-21:
Day of Pentecost - the Holy Spirit descends on Jesus' disciples as a violent wind and tongues of fire. This empowered them to speak in different languages, allowing a crowd of diverse international visitors to hear the gospel in their own native tongues.

Psalm 104:24-34, 35b:
A glorious picture of God as creator and a sweeping view of the world God made.

1 Corinthians 12:3b-13:
Focus is on some of the specific gifts of the Holy Spirit. "There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

John 20:19-23:
Jesus appears to His disciples behind locked doors on the evening of His resurrection. He calms their fear, commissions them to continue His ministry, breathes the Holy Spirit into them, and gives them the authority to forgive or retain sins.

The tradition is to wear red on this Sunday, a visual reminder, symbolizing fire, as The Holy Spirit appeared to the disciples as "tongues of fire."

All are welcome to join us.

Acts 1:6-14
The disciples ask Jesus when he will restore the kingdom to Israel. Instead of an answer, Jesus promises them the Holy Spirit and ascends to heaven, leaving the disciples to return to Jerusalem and wait in prayer.

Psalm 68:1-10, 32-35
A triumphant hymn celebrating God as a protector of the vulnerable—a father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, and one who gives a home to the lonely.

1 Peter 4:12-14; 5:6-11
Peter encourages a suffering community to endure trials, reminding them that sharing in Christ's sufferings brings joy when his glory is revealed. He urges the faithful to cast their anxieties on God.

John 17:1-11
