With great joy, we join our Ohio Sisters in celebrating the 10th sacerdotal anniversary of their pastor, Fr. Stephen Smith.

Through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Priests, please join us in humbly praying for a special outpouring of the Spirit of love upon Fr. Smith.

“Accompanied by Mary, the priest will be able to renew his consecration day after day; and the time will come when, trusting the guidance of the Spirit whom he has invoked on his journey as man and as priest, he will set forth upon the ocean of light which is the Trinity.” - Pope St. John Paul II

Today we joyfully thank Almighty God as we celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Priestly Ordination of Fr. Stephen Smith, ordained May 28, 2016.

As the first Pastor of St. John Paul II Scioto Catholic Parish, Fr. Smith has faithfully guided our parish family with devotion, humility, and love for Christ and His Church.

Through the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the sacraments, prayer, teaching, and pastoral care, he has helped build a vibrant Catholic community rooted in faith, truth, and charity.

“Lord, you have called Fr. Stephen Smith to priestly ministry in this particular moment of history… that he might be a witness to Your wonders and the strength of Your Spirit.”

We give thanks for his steadfast service and ask God to continue blessing him with strength, wisdom, joy, and peace in his vocation.

Please join us in praying for Fr. Smith: O Good Jesus, make him a priest after Your own Heart.

Congratulations, Fr. Smith, on 10 blessed years of priesthood and faithful service to the people of Scioto County. Ad Multos Annos! ✨🙏

There are moments in the life of the Church that words can scarcely capture — moments so sacred, so filled with humility and grace, that they offer us a glimpse of heaven itself.

This is one of those moments.

A bishop bows low to kiss the hands of a newly ordained priest.

To the world, it may seem unusual. But to the Church, it is profoundly beautiful. Those hands have just been consecrated through the Sacrament of Holy Orders. They were anointed with sacred chrism and set apart forever for the service of God and His people. “The anointing of the hands of the new priest signifies the special sanctification of the priest’s ministry.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1574)

In that single gesture, our bishop reminds us of something the modern world often forgets: the priesthood is sacred.

These hands will soon hold the Body of Christ.

They will raise the Eucharist toward heaven as bread and wine become the Lord Himself upon the altar. They will absolve sins in the confessional, anoint the sick in moments of suffering, baptize children into the family of God, witness marriages, bury the dead, and walk beside souls in both their greatest joys and deepest sorrows.

And so the bishop kisses those hands — not because of worldly status, talent, or achievement — but because Christ has chosen to work through them.

There is also something deeply moving in the story behind every vocation. God does not always call from places the world considers important. He calls through ordinary lives, hidden sacrifices, quiet faithfulness, and hearts willing to say yes. Every unseen struggle, every act of humble service, every winding road becomes part of the story grace is writing.

This image reminds us that the Church is not built upon power, prestige, or perfection. She is built upon surrender to Christ.

In a culture that often celebrates self-promotion, this sacred exchange reveals the true heart of Christian leadership: humility before God and reverence for the sacred. The shepherd bows before the mystery of what God has done in one of his spiritual sons.

What a gift the priesthood is to the Church.

What a gift faithful bishops are to guide, shepherd, and encourage vocations.

And what a reminder for all of us to pray — fervently and constantly — for our priests, seminarians, bishops, and for the young men whom God may even now be calling to follow Him more closely.

May we never take the priesthood for granted.

May we always cherish the sacraments they bring to us.

And may we ask the Lord to continue raising up holy priests after His own Sacred Heart.

“You did not choose me, but I chose you.” — John 15:16

“Whoever would be great among you must be your servant.” — Matthew 20:26

Lord Jesus Christ, Eternal High Priest, bless our bishops and priests. Strengthen them in holiness, guard them in charity, and make them faithful shepherds after Your own Heart.

Lord, give us holy priests.
