“For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have.”
2 Corinthians 8:12

Which is more important the size of our offering or the attitude with which we give it?

Jesus watched as people dropped their offerings into the temple treasury. He saw rich people place large amounts of money in, some expecting recognition and praise for their generous giving. He saw others like the poor widow that had very little. This poor woman humbly gave all she had— two small coins. Jesus told the disciples that this woman had given more than all the others because she had given everything without expecting anything in return. The rich still had plenty, but this woman’s heart was more concerned with the needs of others than with herself when she gave everything to the Lord. (Paraphrased from Luke21:1-4)

Today’s verse from 2 Corinthians tells us a similar thing. God doesn’t judge the size of our offering. He looks at the attitude of our hearts. When we respond to a need, in love for God and compassion for others, it doesn’t matter if our gift is big or small. Our willingness to give is what matters to God.

We may feel inadequate at times, but God can take our humble gifts and use them in a mighty way. He sees our willingness, He knows our attitude, and He blesses every unselfish act done in His name.

Jesus answered him. “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”
Luke 23:43

When Jesus was hung on the cross to die, there were two thieves that hung on either side of Him. All three were sentenced to death. We have the scripture to tell us about the life of Jesus — Son of God, sent into the world to pay for our sins. We know that Jesus walked the earth and went about doing good — healing the sick, forgiving sins and raising the dead.

We do not know anything about these two men sentenced to die beside Him, except that they were criminals. One of them thought only of himself and hurled insults at Jesus asking “why don’t you save us and yourself, if you are really the Son of God.” The other thought differently though and had a change in his heart. He confessed that he knew that Jesus had done nothing wrong. He realized that he and his friend were getting what they deserved, but he still asked for mercy from the Lord when he asked Jesus to remember him in His kingdom. (Luke 23:40 - 42)) This man knew he had done nothing to deserve forgiveness, but his heart had been changed, and there on the cross, moments from death, Jesus gave the gift of salvation to him.

Then, that quickly, the man’s sins were gone, forgotten, and he was forgiven and restored! Jesus immediately replied “Today you will be with me in paradise.” Jesus knew all about this man’s past. But Jesus also knew that there had been a change in this criminal’s heart, mind and attitude. This man had done nothing to earn salvation, but Jesus lavished this free gift upon him anyway!

That’s how salvation works for us too. When our hearts are changed and we realize that we are sinners; and when we come to Jesus asking for mercy, mercy is immediately poured out to us. We cannot earn it, we do not deserve it, but Jesus freely gives it. Our sins are forgiven and removed from us. Our lives are filled with joy and hope and the security of knowing that we too will be with Jesus in paradise one day.

Now, that is Good News!

“Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.”
John 15:13

This weekend there will be many gatherings for backyard barbecues. There will trips to the beach or lake and folks will enjoy an extra day from work. It is a time to relax and enjoy family and friends — it is a holiday!

Memorial Day is much more than just these things though. It is a day to remember those that have died in service to our country. These heroes gave their lives in the line of duty so that you and I can live in freedom and can enjoy a day off work, a trip to the beach or a cookout with family. We definitely owe a debt of gratitude to all those that gave their all for our rights, and it is fitting that we take a moment to thank God for them and to remember their families that are now having to go on without them.

But it also brings to mind the One that made the supreme sacrifice for all of us— that is Jesus! He willingly laid down His life in order for us to have freedom from sin and the grave. Speaking of His own life, Jesus said, “No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord…” John 10:18. Many of the soldiers that have died in combat, didn’t plan to be killed, but Jesus came to earth for that very purpose! He knew when He left heaven that one day He would have to die an earthly death, but because of His great love for us (his friends) He went to the cross and took all our sins on Himself. He paid the debt we owed and wiped our slate clean.

What a wonderful Savior! Today and always we want to thank Him, honor Him and praise Him for having such a great love that He laid down His life for us and calls us His friends.

“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…”
Matthew 5:44

When faced with conflict and controversy, our first instinct is to retaliate. After all doesn’t the Bible say an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth? When we are hurt or insulted, it is very difficult not to hurl an insult or hurt back to the one causing the pain.

But, let’s take a closer look at the scriptures. In Matthew 5, Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount is recorded. Here Jesus very plainly says in verses 38 - 42 that we are NOT to retaliate or try to get back at those that wrong us. Instead, we are told to love our enemies and pray for those that try to hurt us. (Verse 44)

It is not always easy to do, but just think how much better our world would be if we practiced these instructions. When we truly showed love for those we disliked and prayed earnestly for those that hurt us, God would open doors of understanding and acceptance for all of us. Hearts, minds and attitudes would be changed and souls would be won to Christ!

Just as Jesus set the supreme example by praying for His enemies as they crucified Him, ( Luke23:34) we too, should strive to show this kind of love to others, especially those that seem to want to be our enemies and are hurtful toward us.
