Christians, one way to be salt and light is to vote for candidates with policies that most closely line up with Biblical values. Policies will last longer than personalities. We all need to understand that nothing will be perfect until Jesus comes to rule and reign. Until then, we are to do whatever we can to hold back the decay for the sake of the next generation. - Pastor Dave

We’ve all heard about our need to gather together for church and corporate worship. The writer of Hebrews tells us why. “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:24-25)

As the days grow shorter and Jesus’ return gets closer, we need to come together in fellowship with other believers, especially to encourage one another through love and good works. One reason is the joy of worshipping together. The Psalmist said, “Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, and His praise in the assembly of saints.” (Psalm 149:1) And King David said, “I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go into the house of the Lord.” (Psalm 122:1)

Another reason is to hear God’s truth. To Timothy, Paul said, “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season.Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.” (2 Timothy 4:2-4).

And here’s the thing: when we are not fed a regular diet of sound preaching and teaching of God’s Word, then we become more susceptible to the lies of Satan taking on the disguise of God’s truth. Also, in our times of gathering, the Holy Spirit comes, anoints us, and enables us to hear what the Lord wants, not only for His church but also for our lives. Jesus said that after He departs from this earth, He would send the Holy Spirit. “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.” (John 16:13) Let me end by saying this is what we look forward to every time we gather at a Bible-believing, Bible-preaching, and Bible-teaching church.

In describing the last days Jesus said, “Take heed that no one deceives you. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places.” (Matthew 24:4; 6-7) Those things sure sound like today, don’t they? But in spite of things going on in the world around us, we can have the peace of God.

In John 12:27 we read the words of Jesus when He said, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” By definition, the peace the world gives is the cessation of war, freedom from civil disturbance and an end of hostilities. It’s calling for peace pacts, and peace treaties. But as we have seen, this kind of peace is short lived. There is no place that is safe from conflict. People will move from place to place only to find the same problems and conflicts - just with different characters. They are looking for peace in all the wrong places. There is no real peace outside a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:1 tells us, “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” There are some things that we’ll never understand until we get to heaven. We’re not going to know the reasons for things that happen and there’s going to be things happen that are going to bring pain, disappointment and sadness. But through it all God’s peace will keep us, and that’s because the peace of God knows that God is in control and will give us the peace we need. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7) Notice this peace surpasses all understanding, that is, it transcends all human wisdom and knowledge. It all begins with having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

As we continue with the “21 Days of Prayer and Fasting” which focuses on the world we live in next week, I thought about and praying about what is going on in the world today. We are dealing with things that have never been dealt with before. Apostle Paul wrote, “In the last days perilous times shall come.” (2 Timothy 3:1),. He then goes on to describe some of the things that will happen. These things are happening now. And whether we realize it or not, the unsaved are watching as we go through different difficulties and challenges. Everyone goes through difficult times. But when it happens to Christians, nonbelievers watch to see if our faith is real. And that is the time to show them what Jesus Christ can do, even in hard times.

The Holy Spirit reminded me of what happened to Paul and Silas as described in Acts Chapter 16. We can read about Paul and Silas being thrown into prison for preaching the Gospel. The Bible tells us that their backs had been ripped open with a whip, and at midnight, in the most unsanitary of conditions with their legs stretched apart in shackles that caused a lot of pain, Paul and Silas held a worship service!

The Bible tells us that “at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God” (verse 25 NKJV). Then,suddenly an earthquake shook the prison, their shackles fell off, the walls came down, and they were free to go. The Philippian jailer, assuming they were free, knew he would be tortured and then put to death himself. He took out his own sword and was ready to kill himself. But Paul said, “Do yourself no harm, for we are all here” (Verse 28 NKJV). Then the jailer said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” (Verse 30 NKJV). Paul and Silas made an impact on him.

In the same way, there are people watching you right now. They are forming an opinion about God based on your life and how you respond to difficulties. It has been said that a Christian may be the only Bible that some people may ever read. They will be looking at you, and that very well may determine the course their lives will take. Now is the time to let your light shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:16)
