In John 14:27 Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” Jesus compared worldly peace with God’s peace. By definition, the peace the world offers is the cessation of war and an end to hostilities. It calls for peace pacts, peace accords, and peace agreements, but these are short-lived. No place is safe from conflict.

We sometimes hear about people wanting to move somewhere else to find peace. The problem is that they’re looking in all the wrong places. All of us want peace, peace in the world, peace in our lives, and peace in our relationships. As we watch the news, we see how desperate the world is for peace. There are wars and rumors of wars, terror threats and bombings. And there is conflict in our government, violence in our neighborhoods and schools, conflicts in our homes, and anxiety and stress in our lives. The world tries to find peace, but it fails because the only peace the world offers is a cessation of war through peace pacts, which we have seen fail many times.

When we honestly look at the lack of peace in our world and in our lives, there is one denominator, and that is disobedience to God and His Word, which comes from a heart that refuses to turn toward God and His ways and instead turns toward the world and its ways. Having a peace that lasts, a real peace is a gift from God, because the Lord not only shows us what peace is but also is peace itself. The peace that truly matters, the peace that truly lasts, and the peace that has stood the test of time is the peace that comes through faith in Jesus, whom the prophet Isaiah describes as the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). There is no real peace outside a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, as the Apostle Paul says to the church in Rome, “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 5:1). Only the ones who put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ and have their sins forgiven can be made righteous in God’s eyes. Only then can they have peace with God. You will never have the peace OF God until you have peace WITH God, which comes only through Jesus Christ.

Sunday is almost here, and we’re believing that God is going to do something special as we gather together for worship and the teaching of His Word. We all have distractions and have a lot of things that compete for our attention throughout the week, which is why gathering together as a church family matters so much. Sundays are an opportunity to pause, worship the Lord, hear Biblical teaching, and be reminded that our hope is found in Jesus. Whether you come encouraged or exhausted, confident or struggling, church is a place where God will meet you where you are. Join us tomorrow morning at 10:30.

Today we remember the many men and women who paid the ultimate price for freedom. We may never know most of those courageous Americans’ names. They didn’t know ours. Yet they fought, shed blood, and died so that you and I might live in freedom.

We’re thankful for their sacrifice. And if you served our nation, or your loved one gave his or her life for the cause of freedom, I want to thank you today too.

Their sacrifice reminds us that freedom isn’t inherited. It’s won—and kept—one generation at a time. We’ve seen it tested time and again throughout history ... and even today.

Our rights were given to us by God, not man—but they must be fought for, defended, and preserved for the next generation. This Memorial Day, we pay tribute to those who took up that charge and gave everything for it.

Not all will follow in their footsteps. But we can all answer another call in the fight for freedom—we pray for it, just as men and women of faith have done for the last 250 years of our nation.

As our country celebrates its incredible legacy of freedom—including honoring those who sacrificed themselves for it—we must continue turning to God in steadfast prayer and ask for His help and guidance.

Today is Pentecost Sunday. In reading in Luke 24:49, Jesus told His followers, “I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.” Then in Acts 1:8 Jesus told them part of the reason they needed the Holy Spirit. He said, “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

We need a real revival today that begins with a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit - not just an emotional experience and not just some cold chills. We need to see God work, because our nation needs it as never before. We don’t need some new thing. I will be so bold as to say that we need to get back to the old things, to the very standards that God gave us, and we need to put them into practice on a daily basis. Charles Finney, who was part of a great revival, said, “The experience of revival is nothing more than a new beginning of obedience to God.” Any real revival has brought repentance in the lives of people, a change in the community, and evangelism.

The early church, the one that started on the Day of Pentecost, turned their world upside down. They set the world on fire. The church of today is much larger than the early church and has a lot more resources to use, but it seems like the world is turning us upside down. The reason is because we need a revival - a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit. We need revival in our country. On this Pentecost Sunday I challenge us all to ask ourselves if we are personally revived. And are we living as a committed, on-fire follower of Jesus Christ? I encourage us all to be determined to receive everything the Holy Spirit was sent to bring.

He will empower you to be an effective witness for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Romans 8:11 tells us, “If the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.” Real revival starts with each of us individually and it all starts with having a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
