“White Noise!” – Daniel 6:6-13
March 21, 2023 – March 227, 2023

The simplest definition of white noise is that it is the noise produced by combining all the different frequencies of sound together at once. In our age of technology and stuff, we have become accustomed to “high fidelity.” This is an old audio term that meant a high level of purity in reproduced sound. Our old LPs were most desired when they were “High Fidelity.” On the old vinyl records, white noise was a nuisance, but we danced anyway. Here we see a form of “white noise” in Daniel’s day, his adversaries.

The text clearly shows a lot of noise being cast off by a series of governors, counselors, and chief overseers. Because Daniel observed the practice of praying three times a day and because Daniel had been placed over many of them, they were a bit upset. To get revenge on him, they focused on what he “practiced” (this was not a habit). The text reveals their plot and the trickery they used to install the decree. The conversation with the king was, in essence, white noise because it had no real effect on the situation they were upset with. Sure, they convinced the king to enact the decree, but notice the actions of Daniel. Knowing, full well, of their heinous plot, Daniel returned to his residence, faced Jerusalem, and still prayed three times a day. Notice also, his adversaries knew he would and heard him.

Today’s society is filled with “white noise.” It is not by coincidence, but the express design of our “adversary.” It has a two-fold purpose. One is the drown out the voices of others who are in serious prayer and the other is the dissuade you from praying. Like Daniel, we must make regular prayer a practice (Luke 18:1; 1 Thess. 5:16-18). The volume (audio and spiritual) of prayer will always drown out the white noise of the world. Prayer shunts the sound frequencies all along the sound spectrum. If you pray, and you must, your prayer will get through, … even the white noise (Rom. 8:26).

Prayer: Father, the world and the enemy are determined to stifle my prayers. Please remind me of their power and worth, as I start or continue this practice. In the name of Jesus, AMEN.

“Church in Chains?” – Acts 16:25
March 14, 2023 – March 20, 2023

There is no recorded date for this particular Worship celebration, although it might be on the arrest warrant. The Magistrates have yet to release that information to the public. The records do not show why they were held in the “inner prison,” or why they were placed in stocks, but they must have been a real reason to do so. You know saints are powerful and spiritually disruptive. Many of us were taught there is a place and time for everything. Solomon even wrote a dedicated passage regarding time, Ecclesiastes 3:1ff. Paul and Silas find themselves in a serious predicament. Here they are, servants of Yahweh, purveyors of His Word, but now they are in the depths of the prison, locked in stocks.

Many of us would begin to think about obtaining bail or contacting a lawyer for immediate release, but not Paul and Silas. Scripture tells us they waited (my thoughts) until midnight. That time when today becomes tomorrow and yesterday is gone. Midnight is the close of the old day and the beginning of a new one. Although they were in lock down, they were free to praise. They were held by the stocks, but their freedom to praise was not inhibited because they had an ace up their sleeves and they were about to play it. Please know that “Church” comes from the Old English circe or cyrce which is related to the Dutch kerk and German kirche. All of these words derive from the Greek phrase kuriakon doma, which means "Lord's house" from kurios meaning "Lord or master." These two were not in a “church,” because they were Ekklesia, “Called Out Assembly!” With no Praise team or musicians, no cheering congregation and in the bowels of the jail in stocks, one of the men started singing and the other started praying. Praise is a call to heaven to do something. From either joy or grief, something must be done and because Yahweh is OMNISCIENT, it didn’t take long for something unusual and powerful to occur.

No matter YOUR location, if you sincerely praise Yahweh, the response to your praise will come. Yes, in the core of the Roman’s jail these men had “church in chains.” All too often we make the building (circe or cyrce , kuriakon doma) the cause of our praise, when the praise should be the cause for the building. No matter where we are or who we are around (remember praise is not always loud), we should be able to praise the God of our salvation. Are we guilty of only praising Yahweh when we are in the kuriakon doma? Do we require certain trappings like choirs, loud, driving music, lights, or a mega membership, before we can lift our heads, eyes, hearts, and voice in praise. No matter where, no matter why, we ought to find a reason to praise. Life can be the inner prison, and life may have us in stocks, but Yahweh sees and hears all. “Church in prison” causes earthquakes of hope, release, and evangelism.

Prayer: Father, in the midst of my joyful or joyless circumstances, always draw a hearty, sincere praise from within me. In the name of Jesus, AMEN.

“Goodness and Mercy!” – Psalm 23:6
March 7, 2023 – March 13, 2023

The Twenty-third Psalm is possibly the best known and most liked passage of Scripture in the Bible. Believers and non-believers, alike, lean and depend on its spiritual impact.

All too often preachers and scholars lean only on the grammatical and etymological aspects of this Psalm and overlook the compassion and poetry it contains. It is imperative that, as purveyors of God’s Word, we deliver God’s Word in a pure form. Psalm 23 is wisdom Scripture in poetic form. So long as the beholder holds to the essence of the text, no harm is done if color is added.

An old preacher once compared this psalm to a conversation between two sheep. One sheep had a dutiful shepherd who looked after his every need (vs. 1 -2). In verse 4, this sheep begins to realize just how loving his shepherd was and noted that even in the face of dangers, the shepherd used the tools of his trade to comfort this sheep. The conversation evolves into a testimony and in verse 5, the sheep declares that in the presence, in the very face, of his enemies and adversaries the shepherd prepares a meal fit for royalty for him, and him only! Then Psalm says, “…surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, …” What the old preacher noted was that these two friends, Goodness and Mercy would follow the beloved of God until eternity. GOODNESS would cover the believer’s steps, while MERCY would cover his stumbles. Goodness keeps us on the path of righteousness and Mercy picks us up when we stumble. What a pair! Yahweh orders the steps of a good man (Psalm 37:23), but mercy restores the righteous man when he stumbles (Galatians 6:1).

Yahweh, our Good Shepherd (John 10:11), has provided a path for believers, then fills in the potholes that occur in their travels. When we belong to the “Good Shepherd” life is not so burdensome!

Prayer: Father, keep me near the Cross. There [is] a precious fountain. Free to all a precious stream, flows from Calvary’s mountain. In the name of Jesus, AMEN.

“‘Redemptive Analogies!” – 1 Corinthians 9:20-22
February 28, 2023 – March 6, 2023

Paul was a very shrewd evangelist and this insured his success. Our contemporary efforts tend to join in with the world rather than find a custom, item, or even a phrase that can be used to draw out the tenets of salvation. These tenets, or customs, are called REDEMPTIVE ANALOGIES. They are valuable when identified and engaged.

One such item is a DECK OF CARDS (don’t panic). If used properly, a deck of cards may be employed to share the Bible and the Gospel. Watch this in real time. The Ace notes that there is but one God, the God of Creation, while the Deuce (two) heralds the twofold division of the Bible, OT and NT. The Tre (three) identifies the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. The Four reminds us of the four great evangelists that preached the Gospel, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The Five Wise Virgins are represented by the Five and the Six denotes the number of days God took to fully create the Earth, while the Seven tells us on the seventh day God rested. The Eight notes the eight righteous persons God saved when He flooded and destroyed this earth: Noah, his wife, their three sons and their wives. The Nine calls out the Nine lepers Jesus cleansed, who neglected to thank Him. The “Decalogue,” Ten Commandments, are covered by the number Ten. When we see the King, we realize there is but one King of heaven, God Almighty. The Queen represents the mother of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, while the Jack, or Knave, is the devil. There are three hundred and sixty five spots in a deck of cards, the number of days in a year. We find fifty-two cards in a deck, the number of weeks in a year and thirteen tricks, the number of weeks in a Quarter, four suits, the number of suits in the deck along with twelve picture cards, the number of months in a year.

As unlikely as it seems, even a deck of cards, that some call sinful, may be transformed to share the Gospel with a sinner. IF, … if the Holy Spirit rides and abides with you, you will notice worldly THINGS that might be used to declare Christ and Him crucified. Consult with the Holy Spirit before you attempt to use them and IF given the OK, go for it. Redemptive Analogies are alive and well.

Prayer: Father, help me to see YOU in all that is around me. Then empower me to use it for YOUR glory. In the name of Jesus, AMEN.

“‘The Power of ‘Shall!’” – Various
February 21, 2023 – February 28, 2023

How often do we read a word in the Bible and never really address the impact of that word? How many times do we forfeit a blessing merely because we misread a verse, or misunderstood a word in that verse? Many of us are guilty of these two actions because we just assume we know what a word from the Greek or Hebrew of the Bible means. Take “shall” for instance.

Whenever the word “shall” is used regarding the actions of Yahweh, it denotes a definite, guaranteed action. We have no focal verse this week because “shall” is used so many times and is so consistent in its meaning that to attempt to tie it down to one specific verse would nearly impossible. Yahweh never welshes (fails to honor a debt or obligation) on a promise. When the text says, “Yahweh SHALL,” then you can stand on that promise until eternity. Often, we fail to notice the time frame or conditions and then want to say that Yahweh did not meet His obligation, or welshed on His promise. Consider Psalm 27:14 (KJV), … David writes, “Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.” This is a condition clause that is determined by our ability to WAIT on the LORD. The promise, or reward, for our waiting is a strengthened heart. Notice also, that the time of this strengthening in not stated, BUT … we can rest assured the act will take place because David states Yahweh “SHALL,” not should or might, but SHALL strengthen thine heart. Shall is a guarantee on His part, and an act of faith on our part. Matthew 7:7 gives us a similar example. Matthew records, “Ask, and it shall be given you; …” These words were offered so we could, and would, develop a sure faith in the certainty of answered prayer,. The condition is “asking,” the results, in Yahweh’s own time, is “receiving.” Faith becomes the key to making the promises of Yahweh reality, BUT we must realize that His intent is always to meet His promise to His people. Finally, 2 Chronicles 7:14 flips things around a bit. If we follow a pattern, shall humble themselves and pray, …” then Yahweh promises He WILL! Definitive and certain, but only if we meet the conditions. Curiously, we proclaim this text, but not much has changed. Wherein does the fault lie?
“SHALL” is a powerful and “faith-filled” definitive action and/or promise. Do we have the faith to receive it and act as Yahweh requests?

Prayer: Father, help me adjust my faith to meet the conditions of Your “shalls.” Show me how and why I should wait and be assured. In the name of Jesus, AMEN.

“‘I’ Trouble!” – Isaiah 14:12-14
February 14, 2023 – February 20, 2023

It is truly amazing how many “believers” live in the “first person.” Have they ever stopped to think the damage that type of lifestyle can cause when we think of the salvation? Do they know the author and originator of this type of thinking? True believers are aware of the danger this dreaded disease poses to them and their potential life in eternity.

In this passage, we see the question asked of Lucifer, “How art thou fallen from heaven …?” All too many Christians fail to remember, or really don’t know, that it was “I trouble” that got Lucifer (called by other names in Rev. 12:9 and Ezekiel 28:2) in so much trouble. So many times we think this “salvation journey” is all about us. We live, many of us, as though Yahweh owes us something, when in reality, it is the other way around. Lucifer, living in the heavenlies at the time, allowed “I Trouble” to get him in more trouble that he could escape. Notice the nature of his language is this brief diatribe. In verse 13, he says “I will exalt my …,” then “I will sit also …” In verse 14, he continues suffering from this dreaded malady by saying, “I will ascend …,” and “I will be like the Most High.”

We see from this small sample that living in the “first person” is a dangerous place to live. If we read Genesis 3:12, we see the damage “I Trouble” can cause those created by Yahweh. Even in Genesis 3, we can imagine Eve wondering, “if I eat it, what will happen?” Adam, in Genesis 3:12 clearly states, “… I did eat!” When “I” is the focus and the subject, “we” always suffer. Don’t get it wrong, “I” is not inherently a bad word. Isaiah said, “here am I, send me,” and Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd.” But unlike Lucifer, the focus was not on them, but on the work they were being called to do. What are YOU called to do, and will you say, “Here am I, send me”? It’s all in the way you use it!

Prayer: Father, please continually remind me that “I” belong to You, and “I” must follow Your directives, AMEN.

“What Are We Missing? – Amos 8:11-14
February 7, 2023 – February 13, 2023

In this era of “a lot of this” and “a lot of that,” times seem like when Yahweh warns the northern kingdom (Israel) of its iniquities and promises future restoration. Israel was a distance from “homebase” (Jerusalem) so they had a tendency to… misbehave. The Book of Amos, a minor prophet, contains an enormous amount of information. It has an introduction followed by seven oracles (1:3-2:5), five sermons (3:1-6:14), five visions (chaps. 7-9), and the pronouncement of God’s judgments. That is a lot of recording for a man who was a sheep breeder, herdsman, and gatherer of Sycamore figs. He is considered a “minor prophet” because of the size of his writings.

In Amos 8:11, Yahweh warns of a pending famine and it is most unusual in nature. Yahweh declares that this famine would not be a regular famine where food isn’t plentiful, or the result of a meteorological drought, but rather, a profound lack of hearing the Word of God. The Scriptures have long been the source of contact, education, and direction for all who “CONFESS” to be the children of the Most High. The former and latter rains of Yahweh’s edifying directives will soon cease to be the focus of mankind and as a result men will wander from sea to sea, aimlessly, without direction (vs. 12). Verse 13 adds to this the fact that the “fair virgins” (young women) and the young men would become weak (faint) due to their thirst for the Word. An essential part of this famine, and the possible cause of it, is the importation of pagan worship by Israel. Israel, because of its separation from Jerusalem was tempted to “borrow” gods from surrounding nations and then combine the pagan worship with the worship of Yahweh. In this case, they had embraced the goddess “Ashima,” a Canaanite mother-goddess. Israel went so far as to make pilgrimages to Beer-sheba to honor this demon goddess. We are about to be faced with a similar situation in America today. We have left, or are leaving, the worship of Yahweh for a multitude of other lesser deities. We have begun to worship anything and everything, especially “MONEY!” The initial traces of this Famine are now beginning to show in our communities, our government, our cities, our churches, and our homes. If we continue to consume the sweet treats of this world, we will soon hunger and thirst for the true Word of God.

Prayer: Papa, protect and direct me as the pending famine approaches. I NEED You, AMEN.

Down To Nothing! – 1 Kings 17:1-16
January 31, 2023 – February 6, 2023

Have you ever been “broke,” having spent your last dime and down to nothing? Have you ever been totally devoid of financial or material means and stressed out to the maximum? Well, … allow me to introduce you to Elijah, the Tishbite, and the widow from Zeraphath! Elijah had been reclining, in a sense, by the brook, being provided for by the ravens. Every morning and evening the ravens would bring bread and meat to Elijah and his living was easy, BUT, … one day the brook dried up and the ravens didn’t show up. Been there? Instead of Yahweh giving Elijah instructions to go to a rich provider, Yahweh sent him to a widow who was in the same shape he was. It makes no sense, but because they were both down to nothing, God was able to do something magnificent. The widow’s faith and Elijah’s obedience was about to pay dividends in a very strange, but divine, way.

Be careful what you hear! There are a plethora of “religious Old Wives Tales” that some people are happy to share with you, but your task is to listen to and follow the commands of Yahweh, … no matter how ludicrous they sound. Elijah addressed the widow, who told him her plight and Elijah asked her to make him a cake from the last she had. It was for her and her son, then they were going to expire! She, however, followed Elijah’s crazy request and a miracle happened. PAUSE! The directives of Yahweh don’t always square with what we call “common sense.” Usually when we get a strange directive for Yahweh, we dismiss it and strive to conjure up a plan of our own, only to flounder and fret. Follow Yahweh, no matter what! The widow followed Elijah’s request and Yahweh provided for them both. Sometimes Yahweh works a two for one if you are willing to assist others. Note that the Bible never says the barrel or the cruse filled up, but rather they “wasted not.” In other words, every time she returned to the barrel or fetched the crude, their needs were met for that time. Because Yahweh knows our hearts, He plans and provides accordingly. If your barrel is not full today, just check later to see if Yahweh has not provided for you AGAIN! The idea was to teach Elijah, the Hebrew, and the widow, a Gentile (she was NOT his neighbor), that Yahweh has the POWER to meet the needs of those who are willing to trust Him. Many times, we waste the provisions of Yahweh when He provides all of our needs at once. Being down to nothing isn’t always a bad place to be, especially when Yahweh is in the midst of the plan!

Prayer: Papa, when the chips are down and the world is betting against me, I look to YOU, AMEN.

It’s All About Relationship! – 1 Samuel 30:16
January 24, 2023 – January 31, 2023

Here we see David in a very depressing situation. It is amazing how David, after all his successes and the fact that he knew Yahweh would take care of him and all that pertained to him, could be distressed. Yes, their families had been taken captive and Yes, the camp was burned, but Yahweh had never left David alone and without recourse. Now we see David doing something we ought to learn to do and that is ‘he encouraged himself.” Encouraged, as used here, means “to strengthen.”

Because David’s men were in bad shape emotionally, they could be of no assistance in this matter. David had to find strength from another source, and he did. His strength came from his relationship with Yahweh who wants an intimate relationship with all who know Him. The perfect love of Yahweh will drive out all fear and provide comfort. We must remember (or learn) that everything in the kingdom of Yahweh happens through “a relationship” with Him. Never bypass the step that allows you to be alone with Yahweh where you can strengthen, or encourage, yourself. Many times, just being in His presence and acknowledging that He is near will change the nature of the situation. When you are in the presence of Yahweh, or His Son, you will find a fulness of joy. One can never be around Jesus and not experience joy. Psalm 16:11 reminds us that Yahweh will show us the path of joy, for joy abounds in His presence, and at His right hand are pleasures forever.

David knew his relationship with Yahweh would be all the encouragement he needed. He called for his worship attire (the Ephod) and enquired of (prayed to) Yahweh. The condition of our relationship with Yahweh makes all the difference in the world. “Strengthen Yourself!”

Prayer: Papa, when the world begins to crumble down around me, remind me that I have an intimate relationship with You, AMEN.

The Man On the Middle Cross Did! – Luke 23:43
January 17, 2023 - January 22, 2023

If, and it might happen, someone asks you “if you died right now, would you get into heaven?” If YOU answer that question in the “first person” (I), then you have immediately gone wrong. You know the responses, “because I am saved,” because I have accepted Christ,” because I, because I, because I!! The only proper answer is in the “third person,” I can enter heaven because “HE!”

Consider the thief on the cross with Jesus. What do you think happened when he arrived in heaven? This man had never been in a Bible study, he had never been baptized, he knew nothing about church polity, nor did he have a membership in any church or Synagogue, BUT HE MADE IT. The angel at the gate (hypothetically) might have asked him if he was clear on the doctrine of justification by faith, to which the thief shrugged his shoulders, NO! What about the doctrine of Scripture and again the thief had no idea. Surely, this is not what happened, but for the sake of illustration we use it. After this frustrating conversation, the angel asks the thief, “on what grounds do you feel you should enter heaven?” The thief can only respond in this manner, “the man on the middle cross said I could come!” He had done absolutely nothing to warrant his entering eternal life, nor have we!!!

We MUST preach the gospel to ourselves DAILY, all day, else we will begin to trust in ourselves, trust in our experiences, which is an act of our fallenness as men. If we take our eyes off the cross, then we can only give lip service to its efficacy, while at the same time living as though salvation depended upon us. As soon as YOU go THERE (to self, first person), you will be led to abject despair and to a horrible kind of arrogance. It is only the cross of Christ that can pardon and open the doors to heaven to sinful men. Only His shed blood makes this possible. We must be careful how we look at the source of salvation. If Christ had not died on Calvary’s cross, nothing we could do would be sufficient to open heaven’s doors for us. The Man on the middle cross MUST do the work necessary to save us and give permission for our entry. We can’t even see the need without the Holy Spirit who was at Calvary and knows all.
If you died today, would you go to heaven? Only if the Man on the middle cross says so!

Prayer: Papa, remind me daily that only Your Son can make a way into eternal life. I just receive the benefits of His sacrifice, AMEN.

Who Is The Focus of Your Praise? – Isaiah 43:20-21
January 10, 2023 - January 16, 2023

The context of this passage extends back to verse 13 where the beginning of eighteen divine declarations starts. Take the time to read these nine verses and then list the declarations. This will be an awesome challenge and a rewarding experience.

As you read verses 13 through 21 you discover the plan of Yahweh is to perform actions that benefit “His people.” Here, Yahweh is referring to Israel, but this is one of those Old Covenant prophecies that we New Covenant believers can buy into. Israel is in bo***ge, as many of us are today, and Yahweh tells them that He will eliminate Babylon and the Chaldeans (vs. 14). For us today, that means that those people, things, habits, and conditions that hold us captive will someday be moved and removed. Now would be a good time to identify YOUR Babylon. In the midst of your sea (storm/turmoil) Yahweh has promised to make a path (vs. 16). He doesn’t stop there, but indicates He will destroy armies (vs. 17) and do NEW things then inform you before they happen so you would know. His promise is to make ways in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, and cause the beasts of the field to honor Him by giving them water in the desert (vs. 20; cp Exodus 17:5-6), enough for His people as well.

Yahweh, then, pauses and states that He formed this people for Himself (Exodus 19:4-6). The God of Israel and the Father of our Savior has put forth quite an effort to look after His people. Notice in verse 20 how Yahweh says the “beasts of the field shall honor me, the dragons and the owls: because I give …” If these creatures can honor (praise) Him, why can’t we? Know for sure that all too often we get excited by the music, testimonies, or preaching and lift up our voices, … but to whom? Seriously, are we praising Yahweh or acknowledging the skills of those performing? Do we truly and sincerely focus our PRAISE on the One who has made all possible? Who is the focus of YOUR praise? The hymnist wrote, “Praise God from Whom all blessings flow, …” Is Yahweh really the target of your praise?

Prayer: Father, in light of all You have promised, and all You have provided, accept my praise, in the name of Jesus,, AMEN

Prayer: Father, in this new year, grant that I will always present Your likeness and image to a lost and sinful world, In His name, AMEN
