FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
As I’m preparing to sing a good old hymn this week in service, I was listening to it on YouTube. The comments were completely unhinged and unbiblical!! One person said “now this is REAL WORSHIP!” and then went onto blast any new modern Worship as if it is not real worship.
I completely understand that some music connects much better with certain people. The settings and presentations may not connect with other people! There is rich theology that should not be lost in our hymns. There are also many wonderful modern songs filled with just as much deep theology. They also have a different style of praising God. Many complain that the new modern songs are too repetitive. Let me share with you what the angels and the elders and those around the throne of God cry out over and over!
Revelation 4:8-11 ESV
“And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying, “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.””
What did Christians sing before the hymns we have? How did they worship before an organ and piano or grand choir?
Is real Worship or true Worship based on a style of music? Absolutely not Jesus says this in Matthew.
John 4:23-24 ESV
“But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.””
I’ve heard people disparage the use of certain instruments. Somehow they are not fit for a Worship service going as far as saying, they are of the devil.
I think many folks would be shocked to hear a time of praise and worship in the way that King David describes it in Psalms
Psalm 150:3-6 ESV
“Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him with sounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! Praise the LORD!”
I understand that tradition has a huge role to play in how we look at our time of worship in singing! More importantly is that we worship in spirit and in TRUTH!!
Some have an obnoxious insistence on not participating in Worship because there is something that we don’t like about it. Maybe its a sound we don’t like, an instrument we don’t like, a beat that we don’t like, an organ that we don’t like, a piano that we don’t like, how someone dresses that we don’t like in worship! This screams loudly that we are not worshiping in spirit and in Truth. We are not lifting up our voices to him who sits on the throne. We are stubbornly, refuse to Worship because we want it our way!
Remember, Worship is about Jesus. It is about singing songs to him. It is about spending time in his presence, in his word with his people in spirit and in Truth.
Worship is a spiritual connection where our soul, mind and body lift up praise and adoration to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!! Even when we don’t FEEL like it!!
It’s not something that we fake. It’s not a production. It’s not a concert. It’s not about favorites or tradition. It’s about Jesus!! Connecting with him in spirit and in truth.
