High Country Taizé

High Country Taizé Taizé service at 6 p.m. the first Sunday of every month at The Sloop Chapel in Crossnore, NC.

02/17/2026

The season of Lent begins with a sacred invitation — an invitation to pause, to reflect, and to return our hearts to God. I warmly invite you to gather for our Ash Wednesday service 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, at Pine Grove United Methodist Church, 53 Pine Grove Road, Spruce Pine, NC.

This service is a shared time of worship for the congregations of Elk Park United Methodist Church, Newland United Methodist Church, and Pine Grove United Methodist Church. It is a meaningful opportunity for us to unite as one body in Christ, seeking renewal and recommitting ourselves to the journey of faith.

During the service, we will experience prayer, scripture, quiet reflection, and the imposition of ashes — the ancient sign that reminds us of both our humanity and God’s redeeming grace. Ash Wednesday calls us to honesty about our lives, trust in God’s mercy, and hope in the promise of resurrection.

Whether Lent is a familiar rhythm for you or a new step in your spiritual walk, this service offers space to begin again — grounded in grace, surrounded by community, and anchored in Christ.

We hope you will make plans to join us and invite a friend to come with you.

Lighting Candles, Lifting Prayers
One of the most cherished moments in our Taizé gatherings is the lighting of candles — each flame a prayer offered for someone, a situation, or a soul in need. In that soft light, we find hope. We see how even the smallest act of prayer can shine in the darkness. And as our flames gather, they remind us that we are never praying alone. Our light is shared.

Practice This Week: Light a candle at home each evening and offer a simple prayer for someone on your heart. Let the light speak what words cannot.

One of the defining features of Taizé prayer is its simplicity—simple songs, simple words, and simple beauty. But this simplicity is not shallow. It’s a profound choice to let go of what distracts us from the sacred. In your own life, cultivating simplicity—whether in your schedule, your home, or your spiritual habits—can lead to a deeper connection with what truly matters. When we clear space, we create room for God.

Practice This Week:
Choose one small area of your life to simplify—your calendar, your desk, or your phone habits—and notice how it affects your spirit.

In the spirit of this holiday weekend, as we celebrate freedom and reflect on peace, come find quiet renewal through meditative chants, silence, scripture, and candlelight. Whether you're seeking healing, hope, or a deeper connection to the Divine, this time of worship offers a gentle rhythm for the soul.

All are welcome — bring a friend, come as you are, and rest in God’s presence.

A Prayer for Monday of Holy Week
Almighty God, whose dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace, through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. (The Book of Common Prayer)
