Prayer Lab’s themes this year will be inspired by our weekly Torah portions. This month’s theme is Blessings of Shalom.

Prayer Lab is a non-traditional Shabbat evening service combining contemporary readings and poetry, participatory music, time set aside for meditation, and more. Worshippers are encouraged to come with open minds and open hearts. All are welcome!

In numerous interviews over the past year, Rachel Goldberg-Polin spoke about the grounding power that Judaism’s daily prayer of gratitude, Modeh Ani, had for her while her son, Hersh (z”l), was being held in captivity. Rachel’s words inspired Rabbi Goldstein to create Seeing the Good, a 21-day practice encouraging others to take up the tradition of reciting Modeh Ani each morning.

Sign up for Seeing the Good at https://sestl.co/good24 to receive a brief email for 21 days, beginning this Friday, November 8, introducing us to the wisdom of Judaism and other traditions, and supporting us as we try to incorporate a new ritual of prayer into our lives.

You can also attend a Virtual Kick-Off on Wednesday, November 6 at 7 p.m. Rabbi Goldstein will preview how to incorporate the notion of a daily time to focus on gratitude into our lives, whether through prayer, journaling, meditation, or reflection. Register at https://sestl.co/goodkickoff

As we begin the Hebrew month of Elul, our minds and hearts are turned toward the process of teshuvah, which means repentance, but comes from the same Hebrew root that means “to turn.”

Repentance is an act of turning away from harmful actions or habits and turning back toward a path of righteousness, generosity and kindness. During the month of Elul, we are to reflect on our words, actions, habits and thoughts of the past year. When were we acting in accordance with the person God wants us to be or we believe we should be? When did we miss the mark? Tradition tells us that God is waiting for us to embark on the path of teshuvah at every moment. Now is the time to begin.
