KYUMC Advocacy Team Welcome to the KYUMC Advocacy Team information page!

As we continue to see and reckon with the fallout from the American attack upon Venezuela and the kidnapping of a foreign governmental executive, Nicolás Maduro, by the military of the United States of America, the KYUMC Advocacy Team calls upon all United Methodists in the Kentucky Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church to remember our calling as Christians to be makers of peace and bringers of justice. We invite you to follow the link below to the General Board of Church and Society 'Faith & Facts' card on peacebuilding. We ask you to contact Senator Mitch McConnell, Senator Rand Paul, and your representative; Congressman Hal Rogers, Congressman Thomas Massie, Congressman James Comer, Congressman Brett Guthrie, Congressman Andy Barr, or Rep. Morgan McGarvey. Let them know that "the church deplores war and all other forms of violent conflict and urges the peaceful settlement of all disputes. We yearn for the day when there will be no more war and people will live together in peace and justice."(Social Principles, ¶ 163.F) Tell them to use the power of Congress to put an end to this act of aggression and breach of international law IMMEDIATELY!
Your Advocacy Team stands in solidarity with our siblings in Venezuela against this senseless violence, and we call upon all United Methodists, all of our Christian siblings, and all who believe in the inherent value and deserved dignity of every human life to join us in the struggle for an end to all armed conflict around the world!

As news of this senseless act of violence at Kentucky State University continues to spread, your KYUMC Advocacy Team encourages all United Methodists in Kentucky to be in prayer for the victims of this violent act, the perpetrator, and all of the KSU community, especially the KSU Wesley Foundation. Our prayers cannot, however be our only action in the face of such violence. We invite all United Methodists in Kentucky to visit https://www.umcjustice.org/documents/18 for the Faith and Facts Card on Gun Violence from the General Board of Church and Society. We also encourage all United Methodists to put our faith into action, join our voices together in social witness, and be peacemakers within our communities. Some ways to do this are:
Talk about the impact of gun violence in your communities:
Host church and community conversations; join ecumenical and
interfaith partnerships; and walk alongside gun violence survivors through
prayer, pastoral care, creating space, and identifying other resources.
• Use the Kingdom Dreams Violent Realities, a Bible study on gun violence
prevention, in your congregation to learn how to address gun violence as
a spiritual and moral issue: https://www.umcjustice.org/latest/kingdomdreams-violent-realities-bible-study-412
• Join the UMC Gun Violence Prevention Network, a group of grassroots
leaders nationally in the United States who are working in their
communities to prevent gun violence. Email [email protected] for
more information.
• Advocate for laws that prevent and reduce gun violence, including banning assault weapons, universal background checks, safe storage, banning concealed fi****ms on school campuses, and ensuring all guns are sold through licensed gun retailers.
• Sign up for email alerts on gun violence prevention at

What’s the difference between a Land Acknowledgement and a Welcome by the Original People?
It’s more than wording. It’s about respect, relationship, and understanding spiritual sovereignty.
The Native American International Caucus has created guidelines for United Methodist congregations to approach this work with humility and care.
