Faith and Works
Through the ages debate has raged on the question are we saved by our works or by faith alone.
The Bible tells us we are saved by grace through our faith in Jesus Christ, so are works even important?
James 1:22-27
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. .
The Bible tells us in Romans 10:9 to declare with our mouth that Jesus Is Lord and believe in our hearts that he was raised from the dead, we will be saved.
So is it enough to go to church every Sunday, speak the words and carry on as usual for the rest of the week?
How could this be enough, you have been granted a new life in Christ! This gift by grace should have changed you and inspired you to live a more Christ like life!
It is not enough to simply acknowledge Christ with your lips. Even the demons knew who Christ was.
Jesus once came on a man possess by demons:
Like 8: 27-31
When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!” For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.
Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”
“Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.
The demons knew Christ was the Son of God. But refused to take him into their hearts.
As Christians we must accept him into our heart, and evidence of that will be seen in your works.
James 2:14-20
What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.”
Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless?
This passage from the book of James not only illustrates the futility of faith without works. It also illustrates that in order to support a person's spiritual needs, their physical needs must first be addressed.
So why as Christians should we concern ourselves with others and meet their needs through our works?
Our works bring glory to God and are a visible expression of our faith to others. This ministry is my way of sharing my faith and through it works honoring the glory of the Father.
What will your expression of faith be? May God bless you and all your good works.
