As we approach the end of the summer, let's recall Irish American summer vacations of years past.

For generations, Irish immigrants, Irish Americans and their families spent summer holidays in East Durham, NY. It's hamlet upstate that attracted visitors from many places but primarily NY and NJ where Irish immigrants could relive what they left behind and future generations could keep the tradition alive.

As we get ready for our Fire Craic-er event today, we wanted to share some AOH history with you.

Before there was any safety net for the Irish in America, there was the lodge that made sure your family did not starve if you died. That was the promise of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

Founded in New York in 1836 by Irish Catholic immigrants, the Hibernians began as a mutual aid society, guarding churches from anti-Irish mobs and paying out a few dollars a week when a member fell sick or was killed on the job. 🍀 For a people shut out of banks, unions and respectable society, the AOH was insurance, brotherhood and a piece of home all at once. It marched at the head of the Saint Patrick's Day parade, defended the faith, and gave the newcomer a name to drop and a hand to shake in a hostile city. ☘️

Nearly two centuries on, it is the oldest Irish Catholic organization in America and still going strong. Was your grandfather or great uncle ever a member of the AOH?

During the week of America's 250th birthday, we will profile a different Irish Catholic contributor to the cause of independence 250 years ago.

Today's focus party is Sgt. Timothy Murphy (1751–1818), the son of immigrants from County Donegal.

A frontier rifleman of Irish Catholic parentage (his parents emigrated from County Donegal), his family settled in the Pennsylvania frontier, which was common for Catholics who still faced religious persecution in the colonies.

Murphy, a renowned rifleman and sharpshooter, is credited with firing the decisive shot that killed British General Simon Fraser at the Battle of Saratoga (1777).

This victory convinced France that the Americans could win — leading to the French alliance that changed the course of the war.
