Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers, grandmothers and mother figures! Thank you for all you do!

For some insight into Ireland's Mothers Day traditions, and why its date can change significantly from year to year, check out this article on Irish Central.

While the United States marks Mother’s Day in May, Ireland celebrates Mothering Sunday during Lent with flowers, breakfast in bed and family rituals that have endured for generations.

Brendan was born in AD 484 in Tralee, County Kerry. He is one of the early Irish monastic saints and one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland. He is also referred to as Brendan the Navigator or Brendan the Voyager.

In 512, Brendan was ordained a priest and afterward, he founded a number of monasteries in Ireland and Scotland, the main one being at Clonfert, founded in 561. Brendan was known for his travels to Scotland, Wales, and maybe even as far as Brittany in France.

Brendan is most well known for his legendary journey to the ‘Isle of the Blessed’ as described in the Navigatio Sancti Brendani Abbatis (Voyage of Saint Brendan the Abbot) of the 9th century. Many versions exist that narrate how he set out on the Atlantic Ocean with sixteen monks on a journey that lasted seven years. Some even believe that he reached North America.

Brendan died in 577/578 in Annaghdown, County Galway.
