I don't give myself enough credit sometimes. I sit here, write, share the Bible, and put together these little devotions — and I assume most of the people who subscribe are just trying to support me.
Today, I was sitting next to my friend in Sunday school and happened to glance over at her Bible. She was opened to the verse our leader had asked her to read, but what caught my eye was "Open It Anyway May 26." I leaned over to read what she had in her margin. Not only had she highlighted words and jotted a little note...she had written a lot of what I'd said that day. (And yes, I took a photo...primarily for my delights journal.)
I thought... that's good stuff. But when I got to the end of what she wrote, I realized that while I had written it, I had actually lived it one month later. The last of her notes read: "You rarely notice fruit growing. You just look up one day and realize you responded differently than you would have a year ago."
Last month, a situation arose that made me very angry. My blood was boiling. I have a friend who lives on the West Coast and knows none of the people I'd ever talk about in real life, so I can be open with her and say things I might not elsewhere. I opened Marco Polo and started with, "Now, you know I don't curse often..." and immediately stopped myself. I continued: "No. I don't curse. And I'm not going to let someone else change who I am and who I strive to be."
Now, I'd like to tell you I kept that little moment to myself. But no. I've shared it with eleventy-bajillion people, and now the two of you reading this. I was so proud of myself...but the pride wasn't from doing something I didn't think I could do. I refrain from that kind of language most of my life. I was proud because it was the first time I recognized my own growth. Not in the refraining, but in recognizing that anger shouldn't give me permission to respond in a way I wouldn't otherwise...or to hand the enemy power in the moments that bring out the deepest emotions.
You rarely notice fruit growing. You just look up one day and realize you're different. That's the whole thing right there.
Unfortunately, I did so well with my conviction that now my husband will expect that same grace... y'all pray for me. 😂
