Things receive power from the effort and attention we give them.

This may take the form of lavish instruments, but that’s just one way of giving the magic its due.

Some of the most powerful cards we’ve ever handled were neither gilt nor stored in a lacquered chest. They were a humble set of hand-embellished playing cards that belonged to an old West Virginia woman. She kept them wrapped in her great aunt’s wedding dress, and only removed them from their hiding place beneath a loose floorboard to do readings by moonlight.

She gave them power, or at least enhanced what they had, by treating them like revered artifacts made not of wood pulp and ink, but of wishes and wonder.

The deck pictured here is the Luna by Matt Hughes and U.S. Games Systems, Inc. , and it seems to appreciate our love of theatrical ceremony.

We’ll be open this Thursday (9/10) from 6-8pm, Friday (9/11) from 6-8pm, and Sunday (9/13) from 12-5pm.

We will be closed Saturday (9/12) to celebrate the wedding of our shop witch, Eleanor. Please send blessings and well wishes to her and her dashing groom that day.

Where does Hierophany & Hedge take its incredible team of shop witches to celebrate their tireless labor?

To the 𝔒𝔥𝔦𝔬 ℜ𝔢𝔫𝔞𝔦𝔰𝔰𝔞𝔫𝔠𝔢 𝔉𝔢𝔰𝔱𝔦𝔳𝔞𝔩, of course.

This year was particularly festive as we welcomed our newest witch, Tallis, and raised our glasses to the upcoming nuptials of Eleanor!

Our princesses and fell warriors demolished the spear-throwing stand, fought a valiant rear guard action against the combined forces of mead and turkey legs, and are looking forward to doing it all again!

Thank you to all the performers, vendors, and staff who make the Faire possible, and to our amazing cohort of the most magical people.

It is okay to mourn the passing of celebrities that you never met. People can be important to you, even if the relationship is entirely one directional.

To lose Dolly and Frank-N-Furter, Steinem and Optimus all in a couple of weeks is brutal.

We feel all of those, but the one that’s hit us the hardest is the passing of Wendell Berry.

He was a Kentucky writer who made a career of beautifully expressing his love of nature and of traditional agriculture.

He believed people should live closer to the natural world, and that our food should come from small farms, not factories. We’re not sure if he would have used the word “magic,” but that’s what he was talking about in his many essays on plants and farming.

As much as he will be missed, one of the great joys of civilization is that his voice, and the voices of those other talents now lost to us, will endure.

So pour a libation or two out for these lost titans, then listen to Jolene, watch Legend and Transformers (the animated one, obviously), and read some essays by Berry and by Steinem.

And go to a farmer’s market this weekend and buy a vegetable from the human being who grew it.

Coil went to New York last week looking to meet some vampires, but ended up going home with an emotionally complicated madman who just never wants to go out in daylight.

Happy (partial) lunar eclipse!

This ~2300 year old tablet records some Babylonian thoughts on such celestial phenomena.

This was written in one of the successor states to Alexander’s Macedonian empire in a sophisticated culture with knowledge of engineering and astronomy as well as thousands of years of religious and magical practice.

All of which is to say that human civilization has been balancing science and magic for a very long time.

Also, take off your damn hat during the eclipse lest you doom us all!!!

The gutted remains of the old Crosley radio factory remind us of the Detroit ruins we used to crawl through when we had better knees, and when there were fewer security cameras.

All harken back to the decades of triumphant American manufacturing, and all are haunted by the radio static dreams of an analog future that was stolen by flat screens, autonomous vehicles, and venture capital.

The durability of these concrete behemoths is amazing. Despite knowing no love for decades, this building still looks like it’s ready for a fight. We aren’t terribly optimistic about its future, but it would be wonderful to see this bit of Cincinnati history saved and reimagined somehow.

We will be open this Saturday (8/29) from noon until 5pm and Sunday (8/30) from noon until 4pm.

We enjoy a good haunted house as much as anyone, but they are just a fraction of the supernatural sites worth visiting. Often the very reason a building is haunted is because ghosts are more likely to manifest near places of spiritual power.

Some are inflection points where all of human history pivoted, others are where a single now forgotten soul experienced a joy or sadness so profound that it forever marked the land.

They may have witnessed just one moment of immeasurable wonder or of wretched tragedy, or endured something banal so often that it became transcendent.

They are places where belief elevates experience, where the veil is thin, or where aggregations of art, beauty, or horror exceed the sum of their parts.

These are sites of the monstrous, of the sublime, or of the ridiculous.

Many are marked with elaborate monuments, even if people aren’t always sure what they are commemorating. Others go unnoticed save for the chill they’ll send up your spine.

We had a few dozen places we wanted to visit around Cleveland, but a combination of heat exhaustion and questionable gas station potato wedges cut our trip short . . . so we’ll have to return soon . . .

Baroness would like everyone to know that this holiday makes no sense. Every day should be a day for appreciating black cats, and such appreciation should transcend national boundaries.

We agree.

One of the highlights of our recent trip to Gen Con this year was seeing all the love for the Dungeon Crawler Carl universe. The community showed up with everything from pinball machines to cosplays, and from larger-than-life statues to visits from Soundbooth Theater and Matt Dinniman.

Our girls, who only tolerate crowds on their home turf, decided not to come, but we think they’re a bit jealous of the trip.

They made this little video to try to get the attention of their favorite crawler, the legendary Princess Donut. We’re sure they’d also do great in the crawl, but we doubt we’d ever turn our back on Baroness.

It was also wonderful to finally get to meet ✷ 𝔄𝔲𝔡𝔯𝔢𝔶 𝔅𝔢𝔫𝔧𝔞𝔪𝔦𝔫𝔰𝔢𝔫 ✷ in person and to catch up with Scott Murphy , Elisabeth Elvira Alba , and all the other wonderful artists there that we’ve worked with over the years.

Also, all our hats (and masks) off to the incredible King in Yellow we exchanged cryptic gestures with by the dice. We just can’t stop thinking about you. Hmmm, that might be a problem.
