The greatest a ca****la masterwork of the early 20th century, the All-Night Vigil (Vespers) is a series of 15 liturgical settings from the Russian Orthodox tradition in 65 minutes. This work achieves great heights of expressive power and intensity through “choral orchestration” by continually varying the textures and sonorities.

Remembering Dr. Robert Schaffer
On Sunday afternoon, May 10, 2015, at 3 PM, the Cathedral Concert Series will host a Tribute of Organ and Choral Music in Memory of Dr. Robert J. Schaffer. The Basilica Maestro (from 1949-2014) passed to eternal life on May 20, 2014. As Cathedral Basilica Principal Organist and Music Director, he held both title and position until his death at age 92. His 65 year tenure may be unprecedented at a North American Cathedral.

Of particular interest to the community will be a Gallery of historic photos and documents attesting to Bob Schaffer’s love of presenting and performing fine music of all types, his early life, family, and military service as a musician prior to arriving at St. Mary’s Cathedral. The gallery will open 1 hour prior to the concert at 2pm, with the concert program at 3pm. There will be music of all types heard before and during the concert.

Many guest musicians will join the Cathedral Bishops Choir for a memorable afternoon remembering the Cathedral Basilica’s beloved Maestro Schaffer. All are welcome with no admission charge. A freewill offering will be accepted.

The Cathedral Concert Series continues this Sunday, March 8, at 3:00 PM, with a musical celebration of Johann Sebastian Bach's 330th birthday. This year's concert will be a very special 175th anniversary recreation of the 1840 "Mendelssohn Program" by renowned concert organist Kim Heindel.

More than any other musician of the 19th Century, Felix Mendelssohn was responsible for reintroducing the long-forgotten music of Johann Sebastian Bach to the musical public.

The so-called Mendelssohn Program of Bach organ works was performed by the composer in 1840 at the famous Thomas Kirche in Leipzig, where Bach served as music director from 1723 until his death in 1750.

The recital included some of Bach's most beloved works for the King of Instruments, such as the Passacaglia in C minor (BWV 582) and the
Toccata in D minor (BWV 565).

Our guest organist, Mr. Kim Heindel, is a native of eastern Pennsylvania. Mr. Heindel has served as university organist and organ instructor at Lehigh University and has taught harpsichord and performance practice at Moravian College. He holds performance degrees from Westminster Choir College and New England Conservatory, and his teachers include Joan Lippincott and Yuko Hayashi (organ), and John Gibbons and Albert Fuller (harpsichord). Mr. Heindel has served as organist at Mount Washington Presbyterian Church in Cincinnati since 2005. He continues to teach organ and harpsichord.
