How Will We Respond?
Lamentations 3:40 (NLT)

Let us test and examine our ways. Let us turn back to the LORD.

Some people have been led to believe that if you are a faithful follower of Jesus, you will never experience difficulties. Nothing in Scripture says that or implies that. If you have been a Christian very long, you know that we are not spared the challenges of life. It is not as if God is a genie in a bottle, and when we let Him out, He grants wishes and keeps our lives free of trouble. Quite the opposite is true. Jesus-followers experience difficulties just like everyone else. Sometimes, God will allow us to stand in places that are uncomfortable to grow our faith. Sometimes, we face difficulties because we are willing to stand for our faith. The issue when we are facing the trials of life is this: How will we respond? Will we react like a child who intends to pout and whine until God does something to change the situation in the way we want? Or will we ask the Lord to help us learn more about Him, grow closer to Him, and depend on Him more every day?

Jesus spoke with clarity when He told His closest friends: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

Heavenly Father, strengthen my heart and mind to know Your Word, Your character, and Your promises so I might stand firm in Christ when the trials of life begin to overwhelm. Jesus promised His peace. May my life-responses be guided by trust in You and all that Jesus accomplished on the cross. In His name, amen.

Armor of Light
Romans 13:11-12 (NIV)
Do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.

You’ve probably noticed that marriage and family are being redefined, gender is suddenly confusing, and perversions of all kinds are welcomed in public settings. These things may look like political battles, but there is more to it. There is an overarching spiritual struggle challenging the principles that God has revealed to us through His Word. I know the overwhelming majority of people who fill churches would rather not think about these things, much less talk about them or take any kind of action. But Scripture calls us to wake up, set aside any deeds of darkness we might be participating in, and put on the spiritual armor that God provides. The battle is not coming. It is here. Let’s take our places in the army of light.

The choices of God’s people make a difference in the world around us. We must consistently humble ourselves, repent, and honor God’s truth throughout every aspect of our lives.

Heavenly Father, You are awakening Your people and opening our eyes to see what You're doing in the earth. I am willing to stand in the places You assign. Grant me wisdom, courage, and boldness. Teach me to honor You by being continually clothed in Your spiritual armor and standing for Your truth. In Jesus’ name, amen.

God Is Calling You & Me
1 Kings 19:10 (NIV)
“I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”

Elijah was a prophet in the northern kingdom of Israel during a very difficult time. Remember, Judah was the southern kingdom at that time. The king, Ahab, was perhaps the most wicked king Israel would ever have. Ahab’s wife, Jezebel, was a witch—and I don’t mean that as a comment on her personality. She was an evil woman who worshipped pagan gods. Together, this pair was doing everything in their power to thwart the purposes of God. But what was Elijah’s calling? To stand as a prophet and deliver God’s perspective in the face of this depravity. Elijah has a significant place in Scripture because of his willingness to stand against the darkness that surrounded him—not passively and quietly, but boldly, and against the most powerful people in his culture.

God is still calling people to stand for Him in the face of ungodliness. In fact, He’s calling you and me.

Heavenly Father, grant me discernment to recognize Your assignments and boldness to speak Your truth. Help me to stand for You, regardless of the opposition. Renew my strength and bolster my courage so I might run the race You have marked for me with perseverance and endurance. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Your Bible in Hand
Romans 15:4 (NIV)
For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

I’d like for you to begin taking your Bible out in public. I don’t mean just take it to church; I mean put it in your shopping cart at the grocery and push it through the store. I mean go to the food court at the mall and read it for a few minutes. I mean put it on your desk or on your workstation. I mean place one in the side pocket of your purse or in the back pocket of your jeans. You see, people today are searching for encouragement and hope, and they don’t know where to look. When you are seen with your Bible, they’ll identify you as someone who might have the answers to their questions. Perhaps they’ll be curious enough to ask, “Why do you carry a Bible around with you?” Then, you’ll have an opportunity to say, “My life has really changed since I’ve started reading my Bible and learning more about God. Do you have a few minutes to hear about that?”

Taking your Bible everywhere you go will change your focus from the routine to anticipating God-opportunities.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word—for its authority, power, and influence in our lives. Thank You for loving us enough to provide truth, insight, direction, and boundaries through Scripture. Help me be willing and available to share Your Truth and Word with others at any time and in any place. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Mark 7:6-7 (NIV)
“‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’”

In Mark 7:1-20, Jesus calls out the Jewish leaders for making their religious traditions more important than the commands of God. They had taken God’s instructions and amplified and multiplied them until staying in compliance with their manmade rules was a heavy burden. Jesus gave them a scathing reprimand when He said, “You nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down” (v. 13). I am concerned many in our churches are likely honoring Jesus with their lips while their hearts are far from Him—following the religious traditions of their families and communities, while keeping their hearts resistant to the relationship Jesus wants to have with them. I encourage you to look at your actions and examine the motivations behind them. Do you sense you are following biblical rules motivated by tradition, or is your heart motivated by love for Jesus?

Choose God with your whole heart and ask Him to give you a revelation of Jesus of Nazareth as Lord, Christ, and King—of all that you are and will be.

Heavenly Father, thank You for redeeming me to Yourself through the cross of Jesus, Your Son. I choose to believe in Him and live for His honor—investing all that I am in the pursuit of an authentic relationship with Him as Lord of my entire life, my Redeemer, my Deliverer, my eternal King. In His name, amen.
