When it comes to choosing a Bible translation, the decision is deeply personal and profoundly spiritual. As the lead translator of the Hope Translation Study Bible, I want to share with you not just the accuracy and uniqueness of our work, but the journey that brought us here—a journey led by the Holy Spirit, rooted in an unyielding encounter with Jesus Christ.
This translation is not just another version among many; it’s the culmination of a divine calling. When I first encountered Jesus, my life was irrevocably changed. That encounter wasn’t just a moment; it was a mandate—a mandate to bring forth a translation that would capture the fullness of God’s word in a way that resonates with the truth and life that Jesus intended for us all.
Guided by the Holy Spirit, this translation was born not out of a desire to conform to traditional religious systems, but to break free from them, just as the apostles did in the Book of Acts. We are blessed to be under the leadership of apostles, pastors, and prophets like Damon Thompson and Mark Casto, who, along with others, ensure that our work is governed by an apostolic authority. This is not merely an academic or linguistic exercise; it’s a spiritual journey, rooted in the most orthodox teachings handed down by spiritual fathers like Polycarp, the disciple of the Apostle John, Irenaeus, and St. Augustine. Yet, above all, we rely on the Holy Spirit in every decision, trusting Him to guide us to the truth.
Many Bible translations today are built upon the foundations laid by the King James Version (KJV), a translation that, while historically significant, was influenced by the political and religious agendas of its time. King James, though we owe him gratitude for bringing the Bible into the English language, was not a spiritual leader sent by God for this purpose but a king who made this translation by decree. The legacy of his translation has shaped countless versions since, but the time has come to move beyond the limitations imposed by those historical contexts.
With the resources available today—far more extensive than those in King James’s time—there is an opportunity to bring forth a translation that is both accurate and spiritually vibrant. We have utilized the best lexicons, such as those by Joseph Thayer and Walter Bauer, to ensure that our translation is not only faithful to the original languages of Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic but also to the spirit in which the scriptures were written.
I encourage you to read the history of the King James translation and understand how it has come to be the standard. But more importantly, I urge you to open your heart to the Holy Spirit. Read our translation alongside others, and let the Spirit of God lead you to the truth. In the end, it is not about human opinions or traditions—it’s about His truth, the truth that leads us to Jesus.
