Many people today don’t want a pastor—they want a motivational speaker. They want messages that inspire them, but not messages that challenge them to change.

God has given pastors to the Church, but we must make sure the pastor is truly called and sent by God. His teaching must line up with the Word of God, and his life must reflect the Word he preaches.

A preacher may simply preach a message, but a pastor has a greater responsibility. A pastor is called to feed the flock, watch for souls, and, according to Scripture, to reprove, rebuke, and exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

A God-sent pastor will not only encourage you; he will correct you, guide you, and help you grow into the image of Christ. Don’t just look for someone who makes you feel good—look for someone who will help you be saved.

For Jesus to truly help us, we have to be willing to help Him help us. The Bible says to draw near to Him, and He will draw near to us (James 4:8). We do our part through obedience, denying ourselves, and surrendering fully—and He responds as our faithful Helper.
