So cool...

Deserts cover nearly one-fifth of the earth's land surface, yet few plants are as well equipped to survive there as cacti. At first glance they may seem simple, but a closer look reveals an incredible collection of features that allow them to thrive where many other plants would quickly perish.

Most plants open tiny pores called stomata during the day to take in carbon dioxide for photosynthesis. The problem is that open pores also allow water to escape. In a hot desert, that can be disastrous.

Cacti solve this problem in a remarkable way. Instead of opening their stomata during the heat of the day, they open them at night when temperatures are cooler. Carbon dioxide is collected and stored until daylight arrives. During the day, the stomata remain closed while the stored carbon dioxide is used for photosynthesis. This unique system dramatically reduces water loss and helps the plant survive in an environment where every drop matters.

The cactus body is also designed to function as a giant water reservoir. A mature saguaro can absorb enormous amounts of water from a single rainstorm. Its trunk expands as it stores water and gradually shrinks as the water is used. In many ways, a cactus acts like a living sponge, collecting and conserving precious moisture whenever it becomes available.

Additional features help ensure that water is not wasted. A waxy outer coating slows evaporation, while sharp spines discourage thirsty animals from helping themselves to the plant's stored reserves.

What makes cacti especially fascinating is how these features work together. Nighttime gas exchange, water storage, waxy protection, and defensive spines all contribute to the plant's ability to survive. Remove any one of these major features and life in the desert becomes much more difficult.

The cactus reminds us that living things are often far more sophisticated than they first appear. From its specialized photosynthesis to its ability to store vast quantities of water, the cactus displays a remarkable level of engineering that enables it to flourish in one of the harshest environments on earth.

We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.
1 John 5 : 18

Christians still sin even though they're saved. The Bible says avoid sinning. Don't make it a habit!

Prayer is a good habit to have to help avoid sin.

Pray without ceasing.
1 Thessalonians 5 : 17
