FRANKLIN – Melinda Gayle Lee, 66, of Franklin, Virginia, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. With a heart bigger than the world around her, Melinda lived every day with heartfelt love for her family and carried a youthful innocence her whole her life. Melinda was the daughter of the late Charles R. Gayle Sr. and Joyce Smith Gayle of Franklin. She grew up the youngest of three, with older brothers, Ben and Chuck. After attending Franklin High School and Paul D. Camp Community College, she worked at Southampton Memorial Hospital for 17 years before deciding to pursue a lifelong dream of cosmetology. Melinda retired in 2011. In 1980, she married her husband of 46 years, Charles Lee Jr. Together they had three beautiful children: Amanda, Brandon and Abbey. They often would all jump in the car and take weekend road trips, attend dance recitals, baseball games, concerts and her favorite place – the beach. Her greatest love was her children and grandchildren. That was her calling and her life. Melinda had a deep love for her grandchildren, Ashton, Breanna, Brayden, Tristin and Matthew. They were her absolute joy and she cherished every second of being their Meme. Melinda loved music and reading. In her younger years, she enjoyed writing poetry. She was truly a beautiful person inside and out.
Melinda is survived by her loving husband, Charles Lee Jr.; her children, Amanda Lee, Brandon Lee, Abbey Lee; her five adoring grandchildren; her brother, Charles R. Gayle Jr. (Ann); and her brother, Robert B. Gayle (Melanie).
A celebration of life will be held June 13 at 1 p.m. at High Street Methodist Church in Franklin with the Rev. Hank Teague officiating.
