ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE - 6:00pm Hazel Dell United Methodist Church, 23109 205th St., Council Bluffs, IA 51503.

A Prayer of Return:

On this day we come before You marked with ashes - a humble cross of dust.

May it be for us: a map leading our hearts back to You . A reminder of the earth from which we came. And a promise to walk in Your grace.

Throughout this Holy Lent, turn our prayer into lanterns in the darkness. Our fasting into space for Your presence. Our almsgiving into hands that extend Your love.

From dust. You called us to life. In these next forty days, call us once again from wandering to wonder, and from shadow to light. Amen

We ARE planning to hold Church tomorrow! Please stay warm.

Join us tonight at Hazel Dell UMC; 6:00 pm for a short but intense Good Friday Service. Today, the Son of God, made flesh, died one of the most horrific deaths imaginable. And yet, this was a gift of true love from God, giving us a pathway to eternal life.

Even if you don't attend church, take a moment to realize the significance of Good Friday.

Prayer for the Victims of Violence in New Orleans during the early morning hours:

Loving God, you are the author and sustainer of our lives. You know the anguish of the sorrowful, you are attentive to the prayers of the brokenhearted. Hear your people who cry out to you in their need; strengthen their hope in your lasting goodness.

We pray today for those who have died because of violence, of terrorism. Draw them to yourself; let your face shine upon them. May they be greeted with choirs of angels and experience your eternal peace and joy.

Be near to all those who have been touched by violence: those who have been hurt, lost their loved ones or lost their sense of security. Be for them a steady comfort and safe resting place.

Soften the hearts and steady the minds of those who would do violence to others. May hate be replaced with love, violence with peace and darkness with your light.

Amen.

To all facebook friends and family and surrounding communities...

May our Loving Father, help you remember the birth of Jesus, that you may share in the song of the angels, the gladness of the shepherds, and worship of the wise men. Close the door of hate and open the door of love all over the world. Let kindness come with every gift and good desires with every greeting. Deliver you from evil by the blessing which Christ brings, and teach you to be merry with clear hearts. May the Christmas morning make you happy to be His children, and Christmas evening bring you to your beds with grateful thoughts, forgiving and forgiven, for Jesus' sake. Amen.

May you all have a Joyous and Merry Christmas

We were inspired recently by the words of activist and theologian, Howard Thurman who casts a vision for what Christ’s mission may look like.
“The Work of Christmas”
When the song of the angels is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flock,
The work of Christmas begins:
To find the lost,
To heal the broken,
To feed the hungry,
To release the prisoner,
To rebuild the nations,
To bring peace among others,
To make music in the heart.

We invite you to share this message with the people you love. Maybe you read it out loud with those you will gather with for Christmas. Maybe find one person who will receive inspiration in its sentiment. Most importantly, let’s share this message by the way that we live.

Merry Christmas from all of us at GBHEM
