Remembering Florence Nightingale
Today, the Northern Tier Convocation remembers Florence Nightingale (1820–1910), the pioneering nurse, reformer, statistician, and faithful Christian whose life transformed the practice of nursing and our understanding of compassionate care.
Known as the “Lady with the Lamp,” Nightingale believed that caring for the sick was more than a profession; it was a vocation of service. Her work during the Crimean War brought attention to sanitation, patient care, and the dignity of those who were suffering. Through her dedication, she helped lay the foundation for modern nursing.
Florence Nightingale reminds us that holiness can be found in places of service: at a bedside, in a hospital ward, in the quiet work of tending to another person, and wherever compassion meets human need.
May we give thanks for all who follow her example today: nurses, caregivers, doctors, chaplains, aides, and all who bring healing and comfort to others.

Amen.
