This is the last entry for this Burns Memorial United Methodist Church page. As of the district conference held Saturday, Aug. 17, 2024 it had chosen to depart the UMC.

The church celebrated their 75th anniversary last year with a full house and Nannette Strickland Roberts was recognized as the last charter member. She and her late husband, Herman Roberts married in November, 1947 with bare ceiling rafters, cement floor and lights hanging by cords from the ceiling. Many have wonderful memories of the members, leaders, preachers, teachers, and friends and neighbors who shared their love and love of the Lord during good times and bad. Lots of hours have been spent with the upkeep and changes that have occurred throughout the years to the buildings and surroundings but the mission of the church has always been to be a beacon of Christ’s love from our crossroads in our corner of the world. Time goes on as will the mission of the ones who choose to worship in this place. GOD IS GOOD, ALL THE TIME.

Upcoming events already scheduled as usual include:
Annual peanut boil, Sun. Aug. 25, 2024, 5:00 p.m. ;
Widows/Widowers fishfry, Thurs. Sept. 19, 2024, 6:00 p.m. (contact usual chairman);
Community 5th Sun. Sing, Sun. Sept 29, 6:00 p.m.

The worship services remain the same with adult Sunday school class at 10:00 a.m., with Worship service following at 11:00 a.m. Additional Sunday school classes are being planned for other ages.

EVERYONE IS INVITED AND WELCOME TO ATTEND!

A new Facebook account will be set up as soon as details are available by a new administrator.

Our Mother’s annual salad supper was a success with the usual delicious variety of salads. Although we didn’t have a planned program we enjoyed conversation around each table. As each one introduced themselves and told some of their interests we had program enough.

Our pastor, Frank Danner arrived on his bright yellow Honda and enjoyed the good food and fellowship and added a couple of humorous stories when he introduced himself.

We had three ladies with the name Carol and three others with similar names: Alene, Eileen, and Elaine. A real challenge to our visitors for sure.

Our oldest mother in attendance was Nannette Roberts (93) who sang her traditional song M-O-T-H-ER. Before she sang she said ‘It’s not Sunday’ so we told her this was just her practice. Hope Burns Memorial UMC will have a good congregation on Mother’s Day and she’ll perform an encore.

God bless you all, and also especially all the mothers whose most honorable job is to teach their children to love God. We pray for all children everywhere to have a loving mother.

Shame on me for not posting our service times on our page.
After COVID 19 , our services have been less than previously.

Currently, we have 1 Sunday school class which meets at 10:00 a.m. Sadly, we only have adults attending, but would without hesitation begin classes of younger ages if needed.

Our worship service follows at 11:00 a.m. and if the pastor runs a bit late, it could be because he preaches at Hartsfield UMC before coming to Cotton. He also likes to speak to attendees as he comes down the aisle.

We have a strong emphasis on the old traditional hymns and usually sing all verses. If we run a little over 12:00 p.m. that might be the reason.

Burns Memorial has been in service for the past 75 years in the current building. Our reputation as a loving church is one of our greatest values. We want to meet the needs in our limited way and shine the light of God’s Word in this dark world in which we live.

Everyone is welcome and we would love to see soon!
