Day 3: The Daily Decision to Carry the Cross
Devotional
Carrying a cross does not always look dramatic. Sometimes it looks like forgiving someone who has not apologized. Choosing honesty when a small lie would be easier. Serving quietly with no expectation of recognition. Surrendering your plans for the day before your feet hit the floor. This is what Jesus meant when He said to take up your cross daily. The cross is not just a symbol of pain. It represents death to self. It is the daily, sometimes moment-by-moment decision to lay down your preferences, your agenda, and your need for control, and to say, "Not my will, but Yours." That sounds hard, and honestly, it can be. But here is what makes it possible: Jesus did not ask us to walk a road He has not already walked. He is not standing at the finish line shouting instructions. He walks beside us, every single step. You do not have to carry the cross perfectly. You just have to pick it up again today. And tomorrow. A lifetime of discipleship is not built in one grand moment. It is built through small, faithful, daily decisions to follow Jesus rather than yourself.

Day 2: When Good Things Become the Wrong Things

Most of us would never choose something obviously destructive over Jesus. But what about the good things? A career that slowly becomes your identity. A relationship that quietly takes the place only God should hold. A dream you are gripping so tightly there is no room left for His will. Jesus calls us to place Him above everything, including the people and blessings we love most. This is not a call to love your family less. It is a call to love Jesus so completely that every other love finds its proper place beneath Him. The tricky part is that good gifts from God can become dangerous when we treat them as ultimate things. When a blessing becomes your foundation instead of the One who gave it, something has quietly shifted in your heart. Every good thing in your life came from His hand. Your family, your health, your talents, your opportunities. They are gifts, not gods. And gifts make terrible gods. The good news is that Jesus is not asking you to stop loving the good things in your life. He is simply asking you to hold them loosely, with open hands, trusting that He who gave them knows how to care for them far better than you do.

Day 1: From the Crowd to the Cross

It is easy to admire Jesus from a distance. We can enjoy His words, appreciate His miracles, and even call ourselves followers without ever truly surrendering to His lordship. But there is a real difference between being in the crowd and being a disciple. Jesus never made following Him sound easier than it is. He never used clever marketing or softened His message to attract more people. In fact, the bigger the crowd grew, the more clearly He defined what it actually meant to follow Him. He was not building a fan base. He was calling disciples. A crowd asks, "What can Jesus do for me?" A disciple asks, "Lord, what would You have me do?" That shift in question changes everything. Here is the encouraging part: Jesus is not looking for perfect people. He is looking for people who are willing. Willing to move from the crowd to the cross. Willing to stop admiring Him from a safe distance and start following Him up close. If you have been sitting in the crowd, today is a great day to take a step closer. Discipleship is not about having it all together. It is about choosing, one day at a time, to follow Jesus rather than simply enjoy Him.

Day 5: This Is What Success Looks Like

We have been building toward this all week. Humility over status. Servanthood over recognition. Others before yourself. No more excuses. Now comes the question: what does this actually look like in real life? It looks like picking up trash in a parking lot when no one is watching. It looks like introducing yourself to the person sitting alone instead of waiting for them to come to you. It looks like showing up to church not to get something, but to give something. The Jesus movement of the late 1960s did not grow through polished programs or celebrity pastors. It grew because ordinary people opened their doors to the forgotten, the broken, and the overlooked, and loved them in the name of Jesus. No fanfare. Just faithfulness. That same call belongs to you today. You do not need a stage. You do not need a title. You just need to look around and ask, "Who needs to be seen right now? Who needs a hand? Who is sitting at the edge of the room hoping someone will notice?" That is your mission field. That is your ministry. And when you live that way consistently, something beautiful happens. You stop chasing significance and start experiencing it. Because real significance was never about being known. It was always about making others feel known.
