A Passage from Pastor:
Isaiah 37:19.20 — “They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by human hands. Now, O Lord our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all kingdoms on earth may know that you alone, O Lord, are God.”

Upon whom are you relying? That was the question that the leaders of the Assyrian army posed to the people of Jerusalem. The mighty Assyrians had swept over nations like a wave upon the shore and now crashed up against Jerusalem, which seemed little more than a wall of sand. Why resist us? Why make it worse for yourself? Are you relying upon Egypt to come help you? They are like a splintered reed or a faulty crutch. If you lean on it, you will be in a world of pain. Are you relying upon your god? Look at all the nations who did that and where are they now? Dead. Destroyed. Enslaved. We threw their gods into the fire and we will do the same with yours. What hope do you have? It seems a fair question. But here is the answer of the people. We rely upon the Lord our God. He is not a god like the idols of the nations. He is not simply going to take credit for good things and then be unable to save. He is the only true God, the Lord of the heavens and the earth. He isn’t tossed into fire. He is a consuming fire to protect his people. And the people of Jerusalem saw the Lord’s mighty hand in action. He sent an angel to destroy this massive army. He led its leaders away with a hook in their nose. He delivered his people. What an awesome account of God’s deliverance! So dear Christian, upon whom do you rely? The Lord your God is not a splintered reed that will break when you put your weight on him. He is not a helpless creation of mankind’s imagination. He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. He is the deliverer, your deliverer. In you O Lord we put our trust. We will never be put to shame!

A Passage from Pastor:
John 14:19 — “Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.”

How long does Easter last? With April 5th being over a month ago and the blessed busyness of May upon us, some might be surprised to hear that it is still the Easter season. The season of Easter lasts 50 days right up to Pentecost and includes a celebration of Jesus’ ascension as well. So allow me to once again greet you with a fitting Easter greeting: He is risen! Yet such a reminder isn’t important merely so that we correctly identify the seasons of the church year. I want to be reminded it’s still Easter because of what continues to happen around us. Since Easter Day, death has laid claim to many people, including some we knew and loved. Since Easter Day, the devil’s lies and my own sinful heart have led me into grievous sins of thought, word and deed. Since Easter Day, the hurt and sorrow of this sin cursed world have attacked the peace that Christ promised us. All that continues to happen around us. How important it is that it is still Easter! And what greater joy is ours that the peace of Easter will not disappear once Pentecost or Advent come around. The peace of Easter continues as long as Jesus lives. As long as he lives we have his promise that though we die, those who believe in him will never truly die. They will live and rise. As long as Jesus lives we have his promise that all sin has bee paid for and his resurrection proves it is true. As long as Jesus lives we have a peace that nothing in this world can give to us, even in the face of great sorrow. Because Jesus lives, we also will live with peace. How long does Easter last? As long as Jesus lives. And he lives and reigns today and forever!

A Passage from Pastor:
Psalm 36:5 — “Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies.”

Do you intend faithfully to conform all your life to the teachings of God’s Word, to be faithful in the use of the Word and sacrament, and in faith and action remain true to God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—as long as you live? It’s a big question isn’t it? How far will you be faithful? On Confirmation Sunday it is important that our new confirmands consider this question carefully. Will you be faithful throughout your whole life? It’s not just a question for those making their promises to consider. All of us can take it to heart. Will my faithfulness stretch the whole way? As we hear confirmation promises and reflect on ours, we can certainly rejoice in the faithfulness the Holy Spirit has worked in them and in us. But of course I can see times where my faithfulness has lacked. I have often failed to be steadfast in his teaching even though I was faced with far less than the loss of my life. There have been times that I have neglected his saving Word or heard it with empty intent. I have not been as faithful as I promised to be. My faithfulness comes up short. But the hope that we have is not built upon the promise of our faithfulness. It rests upon the Lord and his faithfulness, a faithfulness that reaches to the skies. A faithfulness that stands despite the times my faithfulness has failed. The Lord promises our confirmands and all of us, that he is faithful to his promises. His love for you does indeed reach to the heavens. He showed its depth when his Son came down from heaven. His promises to you are ones you can build your life and eternal hope upon. His promises are the reason we are bold to proclaim our faith and promise to be faithful to him. Lord, display your faithfulness to us and our confirmands. Today, and forever.
