NorthEast of the Well We Bring God’s Word Into The Hardest Places, With A Focus On Those In Addiction & Sexual Exploitation

"Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to her town, and said to the people, "Come see about a man who told me everything I ever did, could this be the Christ?" John 4:28

What started 17 years ago as an idea from Laura, our Founder & Executive Director—opening her home to share the hope of Jesus with women coming out of prison—has grown into something far beyond what anyone could have imagined. Men & women from different backgrounds & different area codes gathered together in one home to be baptized.

Those taking this next step came from lives marked by incarceration, human trafficking, addiction, & brokenness. Some are still in programs fighting for freedom, while others were inspired by the transformation they witnessed in their own families.

These baptisms carry an intimacy that impacts not only those in the water, but everyone privileged enough to witness them. It was a powerful day of worship, stories of transformation, & seeing new life begin through Jesus.

Our Director of Anti-Human Trafficking, Irma Drummond, Lead Teaching Pastor, Gail Burks-Stansell, & Director of Steps to Success, Beyonka Ray, joined Finding Freedom International on a missions trip back to Nicaragua.

What unfolded was more than organizations working side by side—it was Kingdom-minded unity, setting aside plans to follow what God was doing.
They encountered many of the same women from the last trip—women currently being trafficked—& their response was powerful… they remembered. Just like on Figueroa, where our teams consistently show up to meet the girls where they are, trust is built in the returning, in the staying, in not giving up.

One moment stood out. Stepping over a small brick wall into a brothel space, food in hand but carrying something deeper. Despite constant distractions from the pimps & trying to pull them away, one woman said, “No, I want to hear them.”

The wall was only 2 feet high—but it represented everything: bo***ge or freedom, who you listen to, & what side you choose.

8 years ago, we met Alyssa del Castillo at a program called Heritage House. She was seeking change, but unfortunately found herself lost…

In 2021, we met her again in a moment of desperation, as she courageously stepped into a Bible study at Vera’s Sanctuary. After completing that program, our paths crossed once more at Prototypes—a program for moms with open CPS cases. At the time, she was fighting for sobriety, holding onto her faith, & pursuing reunification with her children.

After completing the program, Alyssa didn’t just move on—she stayed rooted. She became part of our Monday Night Gatherings & joined our women’s discipleship, continuing to grow in faith & community.

Discipleship is at the heart of everything we do—it’s walking side by side & following Jesus every step of the way.
Today, we celebrate a beautiful milestone Alyssa has been gifted a car—helping her care for her family, get to school, & support other moms who are now where she once was.

Thank you to Gary Fortner, one of our incredible volunteers, who gave his time to find the perfect vehicle, & to the grants that support our Steps to Success program, making moments like this possible.

Stories like Alyssa’s remind us of God’s faithfulness—full of hope, restoration, & new beginnings.

January 10th, 2026 over 100 community members, women with lived experience who once worked on the very street we marched, & the support of both the 108th & 77th Police Districts, we raised our voices & lifted signs of Scripture to bring awareness to the bo***ge of human trafficking — modern-day slavery.

We began our 3+ mile march at Faithful Saint Mark Baptist Church, our newest church partner & mission outpost on Figueroa, where Pastor Gentry prayed & charged us to go. And that is what we do.

We go where the need is. We raise our voice. We trust the Lord is on the move, using His people to bring hope, light, & truth into the darkness.

Our next Awareness March is happening May 16th. Location coming soon, but registration is now open. Click the link , stand with us, & be a voice for the voiceless. Visit our website or follow the link provided.

What an incredible night as our Anaheim & Newport communities came together for our annual Christmas gathering. With about 270 people in attendance—from church partners to volunteers, those in recovery, & even some stepping into a church setting for the first time in a long while—everyone was welcomed & loved. Jesus truly shined, filling the night with real joy, genuine smiles, laughter, & excitement for what’s ahead in the coming year.

We’re deeply grateful to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church & the First Congregational Church of Anaheim for helping create a welcoming space for our community on Monday nights. We’re also incredibly thankful for Loaves & Fishes, who diligently serve our community & prepared a delicious holiday meal for everyone who attended—with food still left over to give.

As we look ahead, we’ll continue gathering our programs together to experience meaningful community—while also pressing forward beyond the four walls, meeting people where they are, & sharing the hope & transformative healing power that comes from Jesus!!

We go where the need is—into some of the darkest places—carrying the light of Jesus. This year we once again partnered with the Veterinarian Christian Foundation deep in the Grand Canyon to serve the Havasupai Tribe, who rely on their animals for daily life & survival.

For over 40 years, VCF has shown faithful love to this community through animal care, opening doors for hope, prayer, & relationship. Addiction & depression are heavy realities here, yet on this trip we saw fruit beginning to grow—open hearts, peaceful moments in worship, children drawn to the team, & families trusting the veterinarians with their beloved animals.
It’s hard to put this trip into words. The land is stunning, but our hearts are burdened for the pain this community carries.

As we gather around the table this Thanksgiving, please keep the Havasupai in your prayers. They are seeking more. Pray they encounter Jesus not only during our yearly visit, but every single day.

God continues to open doors for us to step into some of the darkest places while also strengthening our partnerships—like our time at His Place Church West Minster. We were welcomed by Pastor Chris Jones & invited to collaborate with the worship team to lead the congregation, share testimony, & hear a powerful word from our Executive Director & Founder, Laura Johnson. We also had the privilege of praying the Blessing over every single person that attended the services.

We continue to pray for more opportunities to share God’s Word in various programs, to reach the men & women on the streets who are being trafficked, & to encourage the Church to come alongside us as we go out.

We are grateful for our ongoing partnership with Teen Challenge—a year-long, Christ-centered program for both men & women seeking freedom from addiction. This ministry continues to create space for those in deep struggle to not only pursue sobriety but to encounter the transforming love of Jesus. It has been an honor to walk alongside the men from Orange County Teen Challenge as they join us for Monday Night Gatherings & Early Morning Prayer, growing in faith week by week. Today, we had the privilege of participating in their advancement ceremony, celebrating the men stepping into the next phase of their journey.

We are especially thankful for the faithful leadership of the Orange County Teen Challenge staff & their director, Shane Parr, whose dedication helps make this life-changing work possible.

Please keep these men in your prayers. Next Thursday, NorthEast will be hosting a time of worship & baptizing those who are ready to take the next step in their faith!
