With friends like these…

With God are wisdom and power; counsel and understanding belong to him (Job 12:13).

Job 11:7-20

“I know you better than you know yourself!” When I was young, a friend assured me of this. Her intentions were good, but my complicated life as the adopted son of missionaries had been shaped by four continents and cultures. In reality, she didn’t know me.

Zophar, a friend of Job, sounded wise when he assessed Job’s difficulties.

“Can you fathom the mysteries of God?” he asked (Job 11:7).

“They are above the heavens” (v. 8).

Who could argue with that? But then Zophar dared to speak of something he couldn’t possibly know: Job’s heart. Without evidence, he proclaimed:

“If iniquity is in your hand, put it far from you […], you will stand firm and have no fear” (vv. 14–15).

Job responded sarcastically:

“Wisdom will die with you. I also have understanding […]; I am no less than you; and who can but say the same?” (12:2–3).

Job’s reality was so complex that even he didn’t know what was happening (see Job 1–2). He rightly said:

“With God are wisdom and power” (12:13).

These did not come from Zophar, who presumed to have authority and discernment that did not belong to him.

Our friends may need our loving counsel from time to time. But, generally, those in crisis need us to bring their names in prayer before the One who truly knows them.

When has someone truly helped you in a crisis? How can you help someone else in a difficult situation today?

Con Dios está la sabiduría y el poder; suyo es el consejo y la inteligencia (Job 12:13).

«¡Te conozco mejor que tú mismo!». Cuando era joven, esto me aseguró una amiga. Sus intenciones eran buenas, pero mi vida complicada como hijo adoptivo de misioneros había sido moldeada en cuatro continentes y culturas. En realidad, ella no me conocía.

Zofar, un amigo de Job, sonó sabio al evaluar las dificultades de Job.

La realidad de Job era tan compleja que ni él sabía lo que sucedía (ver Job 1–2). Dijo correctamente:

«Con Dios están la sabiduría y el poder» (12:13).

No provenían de Zofar, quien presumía tener autoridad y discernimiento que no le correspondían.

Nuestros amigos quizá necesiten nuestro consejo amoroso de vez en cuando. Pero, por lo general, los que están en crisis precisan que llevemos sus nombres en oración ante Aquel que los conoce de verdad.

The Uncritical Temper

Do not judge, or you too will be judged. — Matthew 7:1

Jesus says one simple thing about judging: Don’t. The average Christian is the most sharply critical individual. The human mind has a natural tendency to criticize, but spiritually nothing is accomplished by criticism. Only the Holy Spirit is in a position to point out what is wrong in someone, because only the Holy Spirit can do so without causing pain. When humans criticize, they only succeed in weakening and wounding.

It is impossible to enter into communion with God when we are in a critical mood. A critical mindset makes us hard and vindictive and cruel. It leaves us with the flattering idea that we are better than others. Jesus says that his disciples must cultivate the uncritical temper. This cultivation must happen again and again; we can’t do it once and be done with it.

There is no getting away from the penetrating gaze of Jesus. He tells us that if we see a speck in another’s eye, it means we have a plank in our own. Every wrong we see in another Jesus finds in us. Every time we judge another, we condemn ourselves (Romans 2:17–21). We must stop using a measuring stick for other people. There is always one fact more, in every person’s case, about which we know nothing.

When we decide to commit ourselves entirely to Jesus, the first thing God does is give us a spiritual spring-cleaning, showing us what we would be if it weren’t for his grace. After that, there is no possibility of pride left, nothing that allows us to go on criticizing others from a place of superiority. Once I realize what God has done for me, it is impossible to despair of anyone else.

El temperamento sin crítica

No juzguen, para que no sean juzgados. — Mateo 7:1

Jesús dice algo sencillo sobre juzgar: No lo hagan. El cristiano promedio es la persona más crítica. La mente humana tiene una tendencia natural a criticar, pero espiritualmente la crítica no logra nada. Solo el Espíritu Santo está en posición de señalar lo que está mal en alguien, porque solo el Espíritu Santo puede hacerlo sin causar dolor. Cuando los humanos critican, solo consiguen debilitar y herir.

Es imposible entrar en comunión con Dios cuando estamos en un estado de ánimo crítico. Una mentalidad crítica nos vuelve duros, vengativos y crueles. Nos deja con la halagadora idea de que somos mejores que los demás. Jesús dice que sus discípulos deben cultivar el temperamento sin crítica. Este cultivo debe hacerse una y otra vez; no podemos hacerlo una sola vez y darlo por terminado.

No hay forma de escapar de la mirada penetrante de Jesús. Él nos dice que si vemos una paja en el ojo de otro, significa que tenemos una viga en el nuestro. Cada defecto que vemos en otro, Jesús lo encuentra en nosotros. Cada vez que juzgamos a otro, nos condenamos a nosotros mismos (Romanos 2:17-21). Debemos dejar de usar la vara de medir para juzgar a los demás. Siempre hay un detalle más, en el caso de cada persona, que desconocemos.

Cuando decidimos entregarnos por completo a Jesús, lo primero que Dios hace es darnos una limpieza espiritual, mostrándonos lo que seríamos si no fuera por su gracia. Después de eso, no queda lugar para el orgullo, nada que nos permita seguir criticando a los demás desde una posición de superioridad. Una vez que comprendo lo que Dios ha hecho por mí, es imposible desesperar de nadie más.

"Help, Lord."

Psalm 12:1

THE prayer itself is remarkable, for it is short, but seasonable, sententious, and suggestive. David mourned the fewness of faithful men, and therefore lifted up his heart in supplication;-- when the creature failed, he flew to the Creator. He evidently felt his own weakness, or he would not have cried for help; but at the same time he intended honestly to exert himself for the cause of truth, for the word "help" is inapplicable where we ourselves do nothing. There is much of directness, clearness of perception, and distinctness of utterance in this petition of two words; much more, indeed, than in the long rambling outpourings of certain professors. The Psalmist runs straightforward to his God, with a well-considered prayer; he knows what he is seeking, and where to seek it. Lord, teach us to pray in the same blessed manner.
The occasions for the use of this prayer are frequent. In providential afflictions how suitable it is for tried believers who find all helpers failing them. Students, in doctrinal difficulties, may often obtain aid by lifting up this cry of "Help, Lord," to the Holy Spirit, the great Teacher. Spiritual warriors in inward conflicts may send to the throne for reinforcements, and this will be a model for their request. Workers in heavenly labor may thus obtain grace in time of need. Seeking sinners, in doubts and alarms may offer up the same weighty supplication; in fact, in all cases, times, and places, this will serve the turn of needy souls. "Help, Lord," will suit us living and dying, suffering or laboring, rejoicing or sorrowing. In Him our help is found, let us not be slack to cry to Him.

The answer to the prayer is certain, if it be sincerely offered through Jesus. The Lord's character assures us that He will not leave His people; His relationship as Father and Husband guarantees us His aid; His gift of Jesus is a pledge of every good thing; and His sure promise stands, Fear not, I will help Thee.

«¡Ayúdanos, Señor!»

Salmo 12:1

La oración en sí es notable, pues es breve, pero oportuna, sentenciosa y sugerente. David lamentaba la escasez de hombres fieles y, por lo tanto, elevó su corazón en súplica; cuando la criatura le falló, acudió al Creador. Evidentemente, sentía su propia debilidad, de lo contrario no habría clamado por ayuda; pero al mismo tiempo, tenía la intención sincera de esforzarse por la causa de la verdad, pues la palabra «ayúdanos» es inaplicable cuando nosotros mismos no hacemos nada. The Way of Holiness

And a highway will be there, a roadway, and it will be called the Way of Holiness… (v. 8).

Isaiah 35:8-10

After Julia was diagnosed with early-onset dementia, she could no longer easily read the Bible, so she began listening to it. Its passages now have a new meaning for her, as she sometimes gets lost or confused by wild animals. When she feels disoriented and afraid, she receives God’s comfort by hearing Isaiah speak of the

“Way of Holiness” reserved for “those who walk in this way” (Isaiah 35:8).

There will be no wicked fools “nor wild beasts”; it is only “for the redeemed to walk on,” those whom God rescues (v. 9).

The prophet Isaiah shared God’s promises for his people, exiled from their home. Far from the temple, where they experienced His presence, they may have felt sad and abandoned. Therefore, the promises of the Way of Holiness, the path to God, would give them hope and strength. The thought of entering “Zion with joy,” without fear or sadness, filled them with rejoicing (v. 10).

Just as Julia clung to these ancient promises, we too, who believe in Jesus, can trust that as we walk with Him, we will know joy and gladness (v. 10). Whatever trials we face, we know that God’s path leads us home to Him.

Reflect and pray

What do these promises of God mean to you? When you experience trials beyond your control, how can you turn to Him?

God, help me surrender my fears to You. I long to be with You.

Camino de Santidad

Después de que a Julia le diagnosticaran demencia de inicio temprano, ya no podía leer la Biblia con facilidad, así que empezó a escucharla. Sus pasajes tienen ahora un significado nuevo para ella, ya que a veces se pierde o desvaría con animales salvajes. Así como Julia se aferra a estas antiguas promesas, también nosotros, quienes creemos en Jesús, podemos confiar en que, mientras caminamos con Él, conoceremos el gozo y la alegría (v. 10). Cualesquiera que sean las pruebas que enfrentemos, sabemos que el camino de Dios nos conduce a casa, junto a Él.

What Do You Make of This?

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. — John 15:13

Jesus doesn’t ask us to die for him; he asks us to lay down our lives for him. When Peter said,

“I will lay down my life for you” (John 13:37),

he meant that he would give up every selfish pursuit and devote his energy, his life force, to following Jesus. Peter’s sense of the heroic was magnificent. It would be a bad thing to be incapable of making the kind of declaration Peter made. The way we understand our duty depends on our own sense of the heroic. If we think heroism means falling on our sword, we think wrongly. It is much easier to die than to lay down our lives day in and day out with the sense that we are answering a higher calling.

For thirty-three years, Jesus laid down his life to do the will of his Father. John says that we should imitate our Lord; we should lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters (1 John 3:16). This isn’t easy. To humble ourselves for others in this way goes against human nature. But we weren’t made for brilliant moments alone. There was just one brilliant moment in the life of our Lord, and that was on the Mount of Transfiguration (Matthew 17). Before and after this moment, Jesus lived where we do—in the valley of the everyday.

“I have called you friends” (John 15:15).

If we are friends of Jesus, we will deliberately and carefully lay down our lives for him. It is difficult—and thank God it is! Salvation is easy for us because it cost God so much. It is only right that putting salvation to work in our lives should be difficult. God saves us and gives us the Holy Spirit, then asks us to work out what he has worked in. He asks us to remain loyal to him, though everything around us would make us disloyal.

Remain loyal to your friend, and always remember that his honor is at stake in your life.

Jesús no nos pide que muramos por él; nos pide que demos la vida por él. Cuando Pedro dijo:

«Daré mi vida por ti» (Juan 13:37),

quiso decir que renunciaría a todo interés egoísta y dedicaría su energía, su fuerza vital, a seguir a Jesús. El sentido del heroísmo de Pedro era magnífico. Sería terrible ser incapaz de hacer la declaración que hizo Pedro. La forma en que entendemos nuestro deber depende de nuestro propio sentido del heroísmo. Si pensamos que el heroísmo significa sacrificarse, estamos equivocados. Es mucho más fácil morir que dar la vida día tras día con la convicción de que respondemos a un llamado superior.

Durante treinta y tres años, Jesús dio su vida para cumplir la voluntad de su Padre. Juan dice que debemos imitar a nuestro Señor; Debemos dar la vida por nuestros hermanos y hermanas (1 Juan 3:16). «Os he llamado amigos» (Juan 15:15).

Si somos amigos de Jesús, daremos nuestra vida por él con deliberación y cuidado. Es difícil, ¡y gracias a Dios que lo es! La salvación es fácil para nosotros porque le costó mucho a Dios. Es justo que poner la salvación en práctica en nuestras vidas sea difícil. Dios nos salva y nos da el Espíritu Santo, y luego nos pide que pongamos en práctica lo que Él ha obrado. Nos pide que le seamos fieles, aunque todo a nuestro alrededor nos incite a la deslealtad.

Mantente leal a tu amigo y recuerda siempre que su honor está en juego en tu vida.

"And I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish."

John 10:28

THE Christian should never think or speak lightly of unbelief. For a child of God to mistrust His love, His truth, His faithfulness, must be greatly displeasing to Him. How can we ever grieve Him by doubting His upholding grace? Christian! it is contrary to every promise of God's precious Word that thou shouldst ever be forgotten or left to perish. If it could be so, how could He be true who has said, "Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they may forget, yet will I never forget thee." What were the value of that promise--"The mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but My kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of My peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee"? Where were the truth of Christ's words--"I give unto My sheep eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand. My Father which gave them Me is greater than all, and no man is able to pluck them out of My Father's hand"? Where were the doctrines of grace? They would be all disproved if one child of God should perish. Where were the veracity of God, His honor, His power, His grace, His covenant, His oath, if any of those for whom Christ has died, and who have put their trust in Him, should nevertheless be cast away? Banish those unbelieving fears which so dishonor God. Arise, shake thyself from the dust, and put on thy beautiful garments. Remember it is sinful to doubt His Word wherein He has promised thee that thou shalt never perish. Let the eternal life within thee express itself in confident rejoicing.

Es contrario a toda promesa de la preciosa Palabra de Dios que seas olvidado o abandonado a la perdición. Si así fuera, ¿cómo podría ser cierto aquel que dijo: «¿Puede una mujer olvidar a su hijo de pecho, y no compadecerse del hijo de sus entrañas? Mi Padre, que me las dio, es mayor que todos, y nadie las puede arrebatar de la mano de mi Padre»? ¿Dónde quedaron las doctrinas de la gracia? Todas quedarían refutadas si un solo hijo de Dios pereciera. ¿Dónde quedaron la veracidad de Dios, su honor, su poder, su gracia, su pacto, su juramento, si alguno de aquellos por quienes Cristo murió y que confiaron en Él, fuera rechazado? Desecha esos temores incrédulos que tanto deshonran a Dios. Levántate, sacúdete el polvo y vístete con tus hermosas vestiduras. Recuerda que es pecado dudar de su Palabra, en la cual te promete que jamás perecerás. Deja que la vida eterna en ti se manifieste con gozo y confianza.

Giving of God’s Gifts

…God is able to make all grace abound toward you, so that […] you may abound in every good work (v. 8).

2 Corinthians 9:6-15

Stephen’s generosity always amazed me. He often bought meals and gifts for elderly members of the church, the sanitation workers in his neighborhood, or anyone who needed encouragement.

Equally amazing was that, although he wasn’t wealthy or an investment expert, his small investment yielded impressive returns, allowing him to continue giving. Whenever someone thanked him, he would point upward and smile, as if to say, “It came from God, not from me.” God was helping him help others.

Paul referred to this in 2 Corinthians 9. Proud of the Corinthians’ willingness to help other believers (v. 2), he looked forward to collecting an offering they had begun to put together (v. 3). By urging them to give generously and cheerfully, he pointed out that God would not only reward those who gave (vv. 6-7), but would also bless them so they could give even more (v. 8).

God doesn't expect us to give what we can't give (2 Corinthians 8:12). Rather, he entrusts us with money, time, or talents so that we

"abound in every good work" (9:8),

and provides what is necessary to be

"enriched […] for every good work" (v. 11).

Therefore, we can give in faith and with a joyful heart (v. 7), knowing that we are giving from what we have received. Meanwhile, we glorify God (v. 13).

What has God given you? With whom can you share what you have received today?

God, open my heart to give generously.

Dar de las dádivas de Dios

… poderoso es Dios para hacer que abunde en vosotros toda gracia, a fin de que […] abundéis para toda buena obra (v. 8).

2 Corintios 9:6-15

La generosidad de Esteban siempre me sorprendió. A menudo, compraba comidas y regalos para los miembros ancianos de la iglesia, los que limpiaban en su vecindario o cualquier persona que necesitara ánimo.

Igualmente sorprendente era que, aunque no era rico ni experto en inversiones, su pequeña inversión rendía de manera impresionante, lo que le permitía seguir dando. Siempre que alguien le agradecía, él señalaba hacia arriba y sonreía, como diciendo: «Vino de Dios, no de mí». Dios lo ayudaba a ayudar a los demás.

Al instarlos a dar generosamente y con alegría, señaló que Dios no solo recompensaría a quienes daban (vv. 6-7), sino que también los bendeciría para que pudieran dar aún más (v. 8).

Dios no espera que demos lo que no podemos dar (2 Corintios 8:12). Más bien, nos confía dinero, tiempo o talentos para que

«[abundemos] para toda buena obra» (9:8),

y provee lo necesario para estar

«enriquecidos […] para toda generosidad» (v. 11 rvc).

Por eso, podemos dar con fe y un corazón alegre (v. 7), sabiendo que damos de lo que hemos recibido. Mientras tanto, glorificamos a Dios (v. 13).

The Test of Character

Make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge. — 2 Peter 1:5

You have inherited the divine nature, says Peter (2 Peter 1:4). Now focus your attention and form habits. Be diligent. Concentrate. No one is born with character, either naturally or supernaturally. We have to make character. Nor are we born with habits. We have to form habits based on the new life God has put into us. We aren’t meant to be shiny, illuminated versions of humanity, floating above everyone else. We’re meant to lead common, ordinary lives that exhibit the marvel of the grace of God. Our willingness to work at whatever task God gives us is how we add to our faith. We must work diligently, no matter how lowly or insignificant the task appears in the eyes of the world. Drudgery is the great test of character. The most significant obstacle to our spiritual development is that we look for big, important things to do, and will not do the thing that lies close at hand because we think it’s beneath us.

“Jesus . . . began to wash his disciples’ feet” (John 13:3, 5).

There are times when there is no illumination in our lives, no thrill or excitement, just the daily routine with its ordinary tasks. Routine is God’s way of saving us between times of inspiration. Don’t expect God to give you thrills. Learn to live in the domain of drudgery by his power.

“Make every effort . . .” We say we don’t expect God to carry us to heaven on flowery beds of ease, but we act as though we do! The tiniest detail in which we obey has the omnipotent power of the grace of God behind it. If we do our duty, not for duty’s sake but because we believe God is engineering our circumstances, the whole superb grace of God is ours through the atonement the very moment we obey.

La Prueba del Carácter

Esfuércense por añadir a su fe bondad, y a la bondad, conocimiento. — 2 Pedro 1:5

Han heredado la naturaleza divina, dice Pedro (2 Pedro 1:4). Ahora, concéntrense y formen hábitos. Sean diligentes. Concéntrense. Nadie nace con carácter, ni natural ni sobrenaturalmente. Debemos forjar nuestro carácter. Tampoco nacemos con hábitos. Debemos formar hábitos basados en la nueva vida que Dios nos ha dado. No estamos destinados a ser versiones brillantes e iluminadas de la humanidad, flotando por encima de los demás. Estamos destinados a llevar vidas comunes y corrientes que muestren la maravilla de la gracia de Dios. Nuestra disposición a trabajar en cualquier tarea que Dios nos encomiende es la manera en que añadimos a nuestra fe. Debemos trabajar diligentemente, sin importar cuán humilde o insignificante parezca la tarea a los ojos del mundo. El trabajo arduo es la gran prueba del carácter. El obstáculo más importante para nuestro desarrollo espiritual es que buscamos grandes e importantes cosas que hacer, y no hacemos lo que está a nuestro alcance porque pensamos que está por debajo de nosotros.

«Jesús… comenzó a lavar los pies de sus discípulos» (Juan 13:3, 5).

Hay momentos en que nuestra vida carece de iluminación, de emoción o entusiasmo, solo de la rutina diaria con sus tareas cotidianas. La rutina es la manera en que Dios nos salva entre momentos de inspiración. No esperes que Dios te dé emociones fuertes. Aprende a vivir en el ámbito de la monotonía por su poder.

«Esfuérzate al máximo…» Decimos que no esperamos que Dios nos lleve al cielo en un lecho de flores y facilidades, ¡pero actuamos como si lo esperáramos! El más mínimo detalle en el que obedecemos tiene el poder omnipotente de la gracia de Dios detrás. Si cumplimos con nuestro deber, no por obligación, sino porque creemos que Dios está obrando nuestras circunstancias, toda la magnífica gracia de Dios es nuestra mediante la expiación en el mismo instante en que obedecemos.
