Freedom in God’s Love

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1:9).

1 John 1:5-9; 2:7-10

Have you ever heard the expression “an albatross around your neck,” a phrase referring to a crushing burden? It alludes to Samuel Coleridge’s famous poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. A sailor kills a harmless, friendly albatross. The crew believes that this cruel act curses their voyage and forces him to carry the dead bird around his neck as punishment.

Do you have regrets that feel like a weight around your neck? We all have moments we would do anything to erase. It can seem as though we are doomed to carry guilt and remorse forever.

However, God’s grace can free our hearts from even the most painful regret. We have all sinned (1 John 1:8, 10), but when we sincerely confess our burdens to God, we are promised that He

“will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (v. 9).

As His grace floods us, His light and love can flow through us (2:10), freeing us to love those around us (3:14).

In Coleridge’s poem, the tormented sailor also finally experiences this grace. When love for God’s creation fills his heart and compels him to pray, the albatross falls from his neck, disappearing forever “like lead in the sea.”

What might an “albatross” around your neck feel like? What does it mean for you to accept God’s grace to remove your guilt?

God, help me find freedom in your love.

Sin embargo, la gracia de Dios puede liberar nuestros corazones incluso del remordimiento más doloroso. Todos hemos pecado (1 Juan 1:8, 10), pero cuando le confesamos sinceramente nuestras cargas a Dios, se nos promete que Él

«[perdonará] nuestros pecados, y [nos limpiará] de toda maldad» (v. 9).

The Never-Failing God

God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

Hebrews 13:5

What path do my thoughts take? Do they turn to what God says or to what I fear? “God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’” If I am listening to God, I won’t simply take his comforting words and leave it at that; I’ll build upon them, adding words of my own:

“So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid’” (Hebrews 13:6).

“Never will I leave you.” God has promised that he will never leave us—not for all our sin and selfishness and stubbornness. Have I truly let God say to me that he’ll never leave me? If I have, let me listen again.“Never will I forsake you.” Difficulty isn’t always what makes me think God will forsake me. Sometimes it’s the tedium of the day-to-day, of living with no great challenge to meet, no special vision to pursue, nothing wonderful or beautiful to urge me on. Can I hear God’s promise when life is uninspiring?

We have the idea that God is going to do something exceptional with us, that he’s preparing us for some extraordinary feat. But as we grow in grace, we find that he is glorifying himself through us here and now. If we hold fast to God’s promise, we will find that we have the most amazing strength, and we will learn to sing in the ordinary days and ways.

El Dios que nunca falla

Dios ha dicho: «nunca te dejaré; jamás te abandonaré».

Hebreos 13:5

¿Qué camino toman mis pensamientos? ¿Se dirigen a lo que Dios dice o a mis temores? «Dios ha dicho: “Jamás te dejaré; jamás te abandonaré”». Si escucho a Dios, no me limitaré a aceptar sus palabras de consuelo y quedarme ahí; las complementaré, añadiendo mis propias palabras:

«Así que decimos con confianza: “El Señor es mi ayudador; no temeré”» (Hebreos 13:6).

«Jamás te dejaré». Dios ha prometido que nunca nos abandonará, a pesar de todos nuestros pecados, egoísmo y terquedad. ¿He permitido realmente que Dios me diga que nunca me abandonará? Si es así, escuchemos de nuevo: «Jamás te abandonaré». No siempre es la dificultad lo que me hace pensar que Dios me abandonará. A veces es el tedio del día a día, vivir sin grandes desafíos que afrontar, sin una visión especial que perseguir, sin nada maravilloso o hermoso que me impulse. ¿Puedo escuchar la promesa de Dios cuando la vida es monótona?

Tenemos la idea de que Dios hará algo excepcional con nosotros, que nos está preparando para alguna hazaña extraordinaria. Pero a medida que crecemos en la gracia, descubrimos que se glorifica a sí mismo a través de nosotros aquí y ahora. Si nos aferramos a la promesa de Dios, descubriremos que tenemos una fuerza asombrosa y aprenderemos a cantar en los días y las situaciones cotidianas.

"The kindness and love of God our Saviour."

Titus 3:4

HOW sweet it is to behold the Saviour communing with His own beloved people! There can be nothing more delightful than, by the Divine Spirit, to be led into this fertile field of delight. Let the mind for an instant consider the history of the Redeemer's love, and a thousand enchanting acts of affection will suggest themselves, all of which have had for their design the weaving of the heart into Christ,and the intertwisting of the thoughts and emotions of the renewed soul with the mind of Jesus. When we meditate upon this amazing love, and behold the all-glorious Kinsman of the Church endowing her with all His ancient wealth, our souls may well faint for joy. Who is he that can endure such a weight of love? That partial sense of it which the Holy Spirit is sometimes pleased to afford is more than the soul can contain; how transporting must be a complete view of it! When the soul shall have understanding to discern all the Saviour's gifts, wisdom wherewith to estimate them, and time in which to meditate upon them, such as the world to come will afford us, we shall then commune with Jesus in a nearer manner than at present. But who can imagine the sweetness of such fellowship? It must be one of the things which have not entered into the heart of man, but which God hath prepared for them that love Him. Oh, to burst open the door of our Joseph's granaries, and see the plenty which He hath stored up for us! This will overwhelm us with love. By faith we see as in a glass darkly the reflected image of His unbounded treasures, but when we shall actually see the heavenly things themselves, with our own eyes, how deep will be the stream of fellowship in which our soul shall bathe itself! Till then, our loudest sonnets shall be reserved for our loving benefactor, Jesus Christ, our Lord, whose love to us is wonderful, passing the love of women.

¡Qué dulce es contemplar al Salvador en comunión con su amado pueblo! No hay nada más deleitoso que ser guiados por el Espíritu Santo a este fértil campo de gozo. Detengámonos un instante a reflexionar sobre la historia del amor del Redentor, y mil actos encantadores de afecto se nos ocurrirán, todos ellos con el propósito de unir el corazón a Cristo y entrelazar los pensamientos y emociones del alma renovada con la mente de Jesús. Cuando meditamos en este amor asombroso y contemplamos al glorioso Pariente de la Iglesia dotándola de toda su antigua riqueza, nuestras almas bien podrían desfallecer de alegría. ¿Quién puede soportar tal peso de amor? Esa percepción parcial que a veces el Espíritu Santo se digna conceder es más de lo que el alma puede contener; ¡cuán arrebatadora debe ser una visión completa de él! Cuando el alma tenga entendimiento para discernir todos los dones del Salvador, sabiduría para valorarlos y tiempo para meditar en ellos, como nos lo brindará el mundo venidero, entonces tendremos una comunión más íntima con Jesús que ahora. ¿Pero quién puede imaginar la dulzura de tal comunión? Debe ser una de esas cosas que no han entrado en el corazón del hombre, sino que Dios ha preparado para quienes lo aman. ¡Oh, abrir de golpe la puerta de los graneros de nuestro José y ver la abundancia que ha almacenado para nosotros! Esto nos abrumará de amor. Por la fe vemos como en un espejo oscuro la imagen reflejada de sus tesoros ilimitados, pero cuando veamos realmente las cosas celestiales con nuestros propios ojos, ¡cuán profunda será la corriente de comunión en la que nuestra alma se bañará! Hasta entonces, nuestros sonetos más expresivos estarán reservados para nuestro amoroso benefactor, Jesucristo, nuestro Señor, cuyo amor por nosotros es maravilloso, superior al amor de las mujeres.

The Power of Music

…David took the harp and played it with his hand; and Saul found relief… (v. 23).

1 Samuel 16:14-23

On November 21, 1915, the hope of Sir Ernest Shackleton and the crew of the Endurance sank with the ship into the dark depths beneath the Antarctic ice. They were stranded thousands of miles from home. Later, the crew discussed several things that aided their survival, including a Windsor banjo weighing over five kilograms. As they embarked on their arduous journey, Leonard Hussey (the expedition's meteorologist) was the only one authorized to carry more than one kilogram of belongings. “It’s vital mental medicine,” Shackleton told Hussey, “and we’re going to need it.” The crew’s journals explained the power of that music. “The banjo […] feeds the brain,” one sailor wrote.

The Bible presents music as one of God’s immense gifts, a way in which His healing and comfort enter the human heart. In the tragic story of King Saul, we see how he was oppressed by an

“evil spirit” (1 Samuel 16:14).

And what did his servants think the king needed to find relief? Music. So they sought out the young David, and he

“took the harp and played […]; and Saul was relieved” (v. 23).

Music offers more than mere entertainment. It can bring joy, renew hope, and comfort weary souls. It is, truly, one of God’s powerful gifts.

"These were potters, and those that dwelt among plants and hedges: there they dwelt with the king for his work."

1 Chronicles 4:23

POTTERS were not the very highest grade of workers, but "the king" needed potters, and therefore they were in royal service, although the material upon which they worked was nothing but clay. We, too, may be engaged in the most menial part of the Lord's work, but it is a great privilege to do anything for "the king;" and therefore we will abide in shall we be as the wings of a dove covered with silver, and her feathers with yellow gold." The text tells us of those who dwelt among plants and hedges, having rough, rustic, hedging and ditching work to do. They may have desired to live in the city, amid its life, society,and refinement, but they kept their appointed places, for they also were doing the king's work. The place of our habitation is fixed, and we are not to remove from it out of whim and caprice, but seek to serve the Lord in it, by being a blessing to those among whom we reside. These potters and gardeners had royal company, for they dwelt "with the king" and although among hedges and plants, they dwelt with the king there. No lawful place, or gracious occupation, however mean, can debar us from communion with our divine Lord. In visiting hovels, swarming lodging-houses, workhouses, or jails, we may go with the king. In all works of faith we may count upon Jesus' fellowship. It is when we are in His work that we may reckon upon His smile. Ye unknown workers, who are occupied for your Lord amid the dirt and wretchedness of the lowest of the low, be of good cheer, for jewels have been found upon dunghills ere now, earthen pots have been filled with heavenly treasure, and ill weeds have been transformed into precious flowers. Dwell ye with the King for His work, and when He writes His chronicles your name shall be recorded.

Es cuando participamos en su obra que podemos contar con su gracia. Vosotros, obreros anónimos, que estáis ocupados para vuestro Señor en medio de la miseria y la desgracia de los más humildes, tened buen ánimo, pues ya se han hallado joyas en los muladares, se han llenado vasijas de barro con tesoros celestiales y se han transformado malas hierbas en preciosas flores. Habitad con el Rey en su obra, y cuando Él escriba sus crónicas, vuestro nombre quedará registrado.

The Secret Of The Lord

The Lord confides in those who fear him. — Psalm 25:14

What is the sign of true friends? That they tell you secret sorrows? No, that they tell you secret joys. Many people will confide to you their secret sorrows, but the ultimate sign of intimacy is confiding secret joys. Have we ever let God tell us his joys? Or are we so busy telling God our secrets that we leave no room for him to talk to us?

At the beginning of our Christian life, our prayers are full of requests. Then we discover that what God wants is to bring us, through prayer, into a personal relationship with him so that he can reveal his will. Jesus Christ’s idea of prayer is,

“Your will be done” (Matthew 26:42).

Are we so committed to this way of praying that we catch the intimate secrets of God? God may bring us great big blessings, but it is the small, secret things that make us love him, because they show his amazing intimacy with us. They show that he knows every detail of our lives.

“He will instruct them in the ways they should choose” (Psalm 25:12).

At the start of our life of faith, we want to be conscious of God guiding us. But as we go on, we no longer need to ask what his will is; the thought of choosing anything else no longer occurs to us. If we are saved and sanctified, God instructs us in every choice we make, guiding our common sense and alerting us when we are in danger of choosing something he doesn’t want. When God checks us in this way, we must obey. Never reason it out and say, “I wonder why I shouldn’t.” Whenever there is doubt, don’t.

El secreto del Señor

El Señor confía en quienes le temen. — Salmo 25:14

¿Cuál es la señal de los verdaderos amigos? ¿Que te confiesen sus p***s más íntimas? No, que te confiesen sus alegrías más íntimas. Muchos te confiarán sus p***s más íntimas, pero la señal suprema de intimidad es compartir sus alegrías más íntimas. ¿Alguna vez hemos permitido que Dios nos revele sus alegrías? ¿O estamos tan ocupados contándole nuestros secretos que no le dejamos espacio para que nos hable?

Al comienzo de nuestra vida cristiana, nuestras oraciones están llenas de peticiones. Luego descubrimos que lo que Dios quiere es llevarnos, a través de la oración, a una relación personal con él para que pueda revelarnos su voluntad. La idea de oración de Jesucristo es:

«Hágase tu voluntad» (Mateo 26:42).

¿Estamos tan comprometidos con esta forma de orar que descubrimos los secretos más íntimos de Dios? Dios puede concedernos grandes bendiciones, pero son las pequeñas cosas, las secretas, las que nos hacen amarlo, porque demuestran su asombrosa intimidad con nosotros. Demuestran que conoce cada detalle de nuestras vidas.

«Él les enseñará el camino que deben elegir» (Salmo 25:12).

Al comienzo de nuestra vida de fe, queremos ser conscientes de que Dios nos guía. Pero a medida que avanzamos, ya no necesitamos preguntarnos cuál es su voluntad; la idea de elegir otra cosa ya no se nos pasa por la cabeza. Si somos salvos y santificados, Dios nos instruye en cada decisión que tomamos, guiando nuestro sentido común y alertándonos cuando corremos el riesgo de elegir algo que no desea. Cuando Dios nos corrige de esta manera, debemos obedecer. Nunca lo analicemos ni digamos: «Me pregunto por qué no debería». .

Our Part and God’s Part

…it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose (2:13).

Philippians 2:12-13; 3:12-16

In Singapore, the government encourages people to support good causes through donation matching. It “complements” donations to charities by contributing an equal or greater amount. By multiplying contributions, it hopes to incentivize people to participate more in charitable giving.

This combined approach reminds me of how believers in Jesus are called to imitate God’s standards of holiness as disciples. In his letter to the Philippians, Paul exhorts them to work out their salvation (2:12) and to

“press on toward the goal” (3:12, 14).

And at the same time, he emphasizes:

“For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose” (2:13).

Believers in Jesus are not justified before God by good works, but there is a complementary aspect to our spiritual growth. After saving us by grace, God calls us to be holy—set apart for Him—and we respond with sincerity and gratitude. Obeying and pleasing Him requires heart and effort on our part, but we do not do it with human strength; rather, He helps us. He shows us when we are wrong (Philippians 3:15), gives us strength to resist temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13), and empowers us to do what is right in His eyes (Ephesians 2:10).

What makes it most difficult for you to be faithful to God and please Him? How can you depend more on the strength of the Holy Spirit?

God, help me to be holy and faithful.

En Singapur, el gobierno alienta a la gente a apoyar buenas causas mediante la igualación de donaciones. «Complementa» las donaciones a organizaciones benéficas contribuyendo con una cantidad igual o mayor. Al multiplicar las contribuciones, espera incentivar a las personas a participar más en dádivas de caridad.

Este enfoque combinado me recuerda cómo los creyentes en Jesús son llamados a imitar los estándares de santidad de Dios como discípulos. En su carta a los filipenses, Pablo los exhorta a ocuparse en su salvación (2:12) y a

«[proseguir] a la meta» (3:12, 14).

Y al mismo tiempo, enfatiza:

«Dios es el que en vosotros produce así el querer como el hacer, por su buena voluntad» (2:13).

Los creyentes en Jesús no son justificados ante Dios por las buenas obras, pero sí existe una idea de complementación en nuestro crecimiento espiritual. Tras habernos salvado por gracia, Dios nos llama a ser santos —apartados para Él—, y nosotros respondemos con sinceridad y gratitud. Obedecerle y agradarle requiere corazón y esfuerzo de nuestra parte, pero no lo hacemos con la fuerza humana, sino que Él nos ayuda. Nos muestra cuando nos equivocamos (Filipenses 3:15), nos da fuerza para resistir la tentación (1 Corintios 10:13) y nos capacita para hacer lo correcto ante sus ojos (Efesios 2:10).
