Ant. Norbert, the burning lamp set upon the lampstand, enlightened all who were in the house.

V. Pray for us, O Holy Father Norbert.
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.
O God, Who has always so lovingly provided for the canons of St. Michael’s Abbey, grant that, through the merits and intercession of St. Norbert, they may elect an abbot to lead them by word and example to the kingdom of Your Sacred Heart. Who live and reign for ever and ever. Amen

June 18 – St. Gregory Barbarigo, pray for us!
Gregory was born in 1625 in Venice into nobility; his ancestors included 2 Venetian doges. His father instructed him in philosophy and mathematics and preceptors taught him Latin and Greek.

In 1643 Gregory was secretary to the Venetian ambassador at the negotiations for the Peace of Westphalia, where he met the future Pope Alexander VII. Gregory then went to Holland, Flanders, and Paris, before returning to Venice to continue his studies and initiating a political career he found was not good for him. Instead, Cardinal Chigi recommended that Gregory follow an ecclesiastical career.

Gregory was ordained priest in 1655 and Pope Alexander VII named him a domestic prelate and appointed him Referendary of the Tribunals of the Apostolic Signature of Justice and of Grace. Gregory also organized assistance to Romans in the Trastevere area who had been stricken with the plague.

In 1657 the pope appointed Gregory Bishop of Bergamo. He was so successful and his fame spread so much that the pope elevated him to the cardinalate.

In 1664 Gregory was made Bishop of Padua and strove to model himself upon the example of Charles Borromeo. He was a strong supporter of the work of the Council of Trent. He enlarged the seminaries of Padua and Bergamo and added an archive and printing press. He also visited all 320 parishes in his diocese.

Gregory participated in papal conclaves in 1667, 1676, and in 1689 when he was a potential contender. Pope Innocent XI entrusted Rome's education to him and the reunification of the Eastern Churches. Gregory fostered catechetical instruction and his compassion to the poor was well known as he gave them his household goods and clothes, even selling his bed on one occasion to help them.

Gregory died June 18, 1697. Distinguished by his piety and heroic patience, miracles quickly bore witness to his sanctity. Pope Clement XIII beatified him in 1761 and Pope John XXIII canonized him in 1960.

June 17 – St. Emily de Vialar, pray for us!
Emily was born in 1797 in Galliac, the eldest of 3 children, and was baptized in secret. Her father was a doctor. At age 13 she went to a Parisian college accompanied by her mother, who became ill on the journey. Despite the best efforts of Emily’s father, her mother died.

At age 15, Emily returned to Gaillac, and in her attempts to help the poor and the destitute, Emily invited them to the house, causing considerable tension. Other young women joined her efforts. In 1832, using an inheritance from her grandfather, Emily bought a house for herself and her companions. Inspired by Matt 1:20, where an angel appeared to Joseph to reassure him: "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary, your bride, because what is generated in her comes from the Holy Spirit," and with help from the bishop of Albi, Emily and 3 other women established the congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition.

Her brother who lived in Algeria proposed to open a hospital near Algiers. Emily and her companions arrived during an outbreak of cholera, and she used money her grandfather left her to open hospitals and schools. Emily and 17 sisters received formal approval for the rule of the congregation in 1835.

In 1845, Emily was enroute to Algeria when her ship was caught in a terrible storm for 9 days. Emily vowed “that wherever they landed safe and sound, she would open a house and dedicate it to St Paul.” The ship came to rest at Malta, and Emily opened one of the first Catholic schools for young ladies.

Meanwhile, back in Gaillac the local superior, deceived by an unscrupulous businessman, had accumulated debts. Beset by slander and creditors Emily was forced to leave her hometown until she found help in Marseilles via the benevolence of the founder of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate.

Emily died Aug 24, 1856. "The saint is dead," said the poor people who knew her kindness. She was canonized in 1951.

June 16 – St. John Francis Regis, pray for us!
Jean-François (John Francis) was born in 1597, in the Languedoc region of France. He was educated at the Jesuit College of Béziers and, at age 19, entered the Jesuit novitiate at Toulouse and took his vows 2 years later.

After finishing a course in rhetoric, John taught grammar at several colleges, and while teaching he pursued studies in philosophy. Noted for an intense love of preaching and teaching the Faith, as well as the desire to save souls, John began his study of theology and was ordained a priest in 1630.

John was a tireless worker who spent most of his life serving the marginalized; working with bubonic plague victims in Toulouse and for the conversion of the Huguenots, visiting hospitals, assisting the needy, preaching Catholic doctrine with zeal to children and the poor. He is best known for his work with at-risk women and orphans, establishing safe houses and finding jobs for them.

He established the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament, which organized collections of money and food from the wealthy. He also established hostels for prostitutes, and helped many become trained lace makers, which provided them with a stable income and an opportunity to avoid the threat of exploitation,

John walked from town to town, in rough mountainous areas where travel was difficult. His preaching style was simple and direct. John’s boldness – perceived as arrogance in some cases – led to a conflict with certain other priests, a period of tension with the local bishop, and even threats of violence from those whose vices he condemned.

John Francis died at age 43 on Dec 31, 1640 at Lalouvesc , in France's Dauphiné region. He was beatified by Pope Clement XI in 1716, and canonized by Pope Clement XII in 1737.

St. John Francis Regis is the patron saint of lacemakers, medical social workers, and illegitimate children.

Jun 15 – Blessed Memorial of St. Isfrid, Bishop
Today at St. John the Baptist Costa Mesa, served by the Norbertine Fathers, we celebrate a special Memorial – that of St. Isfrid, Bishop of our Order.

Isfrid was born c 1115 and later became a canon in the abbey of Cappenberg and then provost of the Church of Jerichow in the diocese of Havelberg. In 1178 he was elected Bishop of Ratzeburg by the Norbertine Canons of the Cathedral.

Even as Bishop he led an austere and truly religious life and preached among the rebellious Wends continually in a persuasive yet gentle manner. He completed the er****on of the cathedral begun under Evermode, and established many parishes.

When Frederick the Emperor replaced Henry, the rightful Duke of Saxony and Isfrid’s friend and benefactor, with Bernard, Count of Anhalt, Isfrid championed the cause of justice and worked for a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

Exalted through many miracles during his life and after death, he was a true light in a time of much darkness. Isfrid died on June 15, 1204 at 89 years of age and was buried in the presbyterium of the Cathedral of Ratzeburg next to St. Evermode.
