John 17:17
Sanctify them through thy truth thy word is truth.
The early church baptized in Jesus’ name because they understood that Jesus is the full revelation of God’s saving authority, and they obeyed both His command and the apostolic teaching.
Here’s a clear, Bible-based explanation:
1. Jesus Gave the Authority of “The Name”
In Matthew 28:19, Jesus said:
“Go ye therefore… baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.”
Notice: “name” (singular) — not names.
The apostles understood that this one name is Jesus, because:
Jesus said He came in His Father’s name (John 5:43)
The Holy Spirit is sent in Jesus’ name (John 14:26)
👉 So the fullness of the Father, Son, and Spirit is revealed in Jesus’ name.
2. The Apostles Practiced Baptism in Jesus’ Name
When the church began in Acts 2:38, Peter preached:
“Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins…”
This wasn’t an isolated case. It was the consistent practice:
Acts 8:16 – Samaritans were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus
Acts 10:48 – Cornelius’ household was commanded to be baptized in the name of the Lord
Acts 19:5 – Disciples in Ephesus were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus
👉 The early church always used Jesus’ name in baptism.
3. Salvation and Remission Are in Jesus’ Name
The reason is simple: salvation is tied to His name.
Acts 4:12
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven… whereby we must be saved.”
Luke 24:47
“Repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name…”
👉 Baptism is for the remission of sins, so it is done in the name that brings salvation — Jesus.
4. Baptism Identifies Us with Jesus
Romans 6:3
“So many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death.”
Galatians 3:27
“As many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.”
👉 Baptism is not just a ritual—it is identification with Jesus, so His name is invoked.
5. The Early Church Followed Revelation, Not Tradition
The apostles did not repeat words mechanically—they obeyed the meaning of Jesus’ command.
They understood:
The name of the Father → Jesus
The name of the Son → Jesus
The name of the Holy Spirit → Jesus
👉 That is why every recorded baptism in the New Testament is in Jesus’ name.
