First United Methodist Church - Corvallis, OR

First United Methodist Church - Corvallis, OR Our mission is to bring people into a living relationship with God, through Jesus Christ, that we might love the world as God loves the world.

The Corvallis First United Methodist Church has been serving Christ since 1848. We seek to share God's love where it is needed most. We are active in organizations like homeless shelters, South Corvallis Food Bank, Community Outreach, Meals on Wheels, The Pastoral Counseling Center, Jackson Street Youth Center, Campus Ministry and much more. As United Methodists, we share a wide variety of theolog

ical perspectives and a commitment to an open minded quest for how to live as disciples of Jesus Christ. Our hope is that this will be a place in which you find God's blessings. Tenets of First United Methodist Church, Corvallis (adopted October, 2016)

The people of First United Methodist Church Corvallis share these understandings…
• We are committed to deepening our trust in the unconditional love of God, shown to us through the life and teachings of Jesus. We celebrate that this great love is open to everyone.
• Among the ways we experience this love of God are sharing in worship, music, service, study, intergenerational friendships, common meals, play, and opening our space to others. All are invited.
• The Bible is our sacred text, filled with stories and teachings that rose out of faithful people’s experiences of God and of Jesus. While we do not see all aspects of the Bible as factual or literally true, we believe scripture holds many great truths.
• We share a faith journey grounded in questions and the search for understanding rather than in certainty and absolute answers. For this journey we draw upon experience, reason, history, as well as traditional and current scholarship.
• Following Jesus is both life-changing and difficult, requiring constant resistance to self-interest and apathy. As a community of children, youth, and adults we are a work in progress, learning to love more fully.
• While following Jesus is one way to know and experience the love of God, we respect and appreciate other people’s spiritual journeys.
• We know that the truest, fullest expression of what we believe about God is revealed in how we behave toward others and ourselves. Therefore, we work for a less violent world, a healthier planet, human rights, and economic justice. While we minister directly with many who struggle, we also aim to correct the root causes of these concerns. Often we work in collaboration with other organizations and faith communities.
• Led by the Spirit of God, we strive to be open, honest, and faithful as we support each other in the particular work we feel called to do – the varied ways we put our faith into action through respectful words and deeds.
• We are learning to laugh more and not take ourselves too seriously, trying to be positive, creative, and forgiving in our lives together.

Sharing a bit of beauty. As I was out taking these pictures, a student walked by and thanked the church for caring for the rose garden. He walks by every day and enjoys them.

Thank you to our rose garden team who works diligently to bring this gift to the community.

Come and dwell in the presence of God. In this place, we remember who we are. We find ourselves capable of hard and holy things. Love sets us free from fear and shame. What is our part in God’s Holy plan? Come listen, dream, discover, as we commune with God.

Words from an 2015 article by Jonathan Aigner

"Where War and Gospel Meet
Because war maintains an unfortunate and undeniable presence in our world, it is necessary not to ignore it, but to interpret it in light of the gospel. I would suggest the following points are part of the pastoral duty of all Christians in a war-torn world, and not just a few times during our summer vacations.

Acknowledge the deep pain felt by those among us who have suffered loss through military action, and the anxiety of those who are a world away from someone they love.

Care for those who have suffered the profound physical and mental effects of war.

Remember that Christ came to restore the cosmos as far as the curse is found, and that all earthly kingdoms will pass away when he comes to reign.

Consider the lives we’ve taken as well as those we’ve lost. All life is a sacred gift. Our national enemies also bear the image of the good Creator.

Pray and work for peace among the nations, especially that war might be always be avoided."

Hope Beyond Hope

“The only kids of fights worth fighting,” says journalist I.F. Stone, “are those you are going to lose, because somebody else has to fight them and lose and lose and lose until someday, somebody who believes as you do wins.”

Loss is inherent to hope. We don’t always see the results of our efforts. And so, part of hope is perseverance—perseverance when things don’t work out, perseverance when we aren’t “feeling it.”

How do we have hope for the long haul? Is hope even required in order to persevere? If not, how do we find what we need to carry on?

The Practice of Hope

“The very least you can do in your life is figure out what you can hope for,” Writes Barbara Kingsolver. “And the most you can do is live inside that hope.”
We’ve unlearned some things about hope; we’ve explored what it is and where to find it; and we’ve found our way into hope as a narrative. What do we do with hope? How do we live inside of it? Where do we start?
