Springtime Cemetery Post!

Late Winter / Early Spring is definitely not the most wonderful time of the year in the Cemetery world! While many of our Families from the city have been without snow for some time, up here on the hill, we have had about 2 feet of snow from Nov up to 2 weeks ago! Now that this crazy amount of snow has melted, the grounds (just like most of our own yards) are not so pretty! Our grounds crew have a lot of work cut out for them.

This is what to expect:

Over the next weeks our crew will be leveling out areas of the cemetery that are quite uneven due to plowing, settling (see post from 2 weeks ago for grave settling info) freezing and thawing, and just the general land upkeep we were unable to do with all the snow this winter. The leveling comes first and when the time and temp are perfect for it, they will be putting down fresh grass seed, doing additional raking and laying hay to help growth and protection.

With all the snow, some items (especially glass or porcelain) that Families have left for decoration have broken, or have worn to the point of being unsightly. Our crew will be picking up anything dangerous to visitors, or tattered and destroyed. They will not be picking up items in good condition, just ones that have become an eyesore.

Dear Friends and Family, hang in there! Soon our azaleas and dogwoods will be in bloom and grass will be taking, and the long awaited spring sun will be shining down on us!

Of course, if you have any concerns, don't hesitate to give us a call!

Cemetery tip of the week!
If your Loved One served in the United States military, you can go to the VA's website and request a FREE bronze plaque to put in front of, or on their headstone! Some people even use them in place of a headstone!

Find out how to apply for a headstone, grave, or niche marker to honor a Veteran, service member, or eligible family member.

We promised some fun new questions/facts/pictures, so here we go!

Common question:
We buried my Loved one recently and it looks like the ground is sinking! (terrible worry that the casket has collapsed)

Ground sinking explained:
The ground we excavate to create a grave, has not been touched in hundreds of years. It is well compacted and probably has some nice size rocks, etc... When a grave is back filled immediately after a burial, it takes time for all that soil to re-settle. The grounds crew gives it some time as nature takes its course, then returns to back fill it again, rake out some of the soil and put down grass seed. Though it may look alarming if you visit before they have refilled, it is not something to worry about! It is just how the ground settles naturally, especially if we get a good rain.

Always feel free to stop in the office or give us a call with any questions or concerns!
