“Marvelous Things!”
Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things!
His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.
-Psalm 98:1
The word "marvelous" isn't used much these days. When most people hear
"marvel," they probably think of Marvel Comics, creators of superheroes whose stories have been cleaning up at the box office for over a decade. When you marvel at something, you are filled with wonder and astonishment. Your jaw drops.
You simply can't believe what you are seeing or experiencing.
Throughout the Bible, God does things that inspire awe and wonder.
Here
are some examples:
* When the Israelites are trapped by the Red Sea, with Pharaoh's troops racing toward them, God opens the Red Sea, allows the Israelites to walk across, and then drowns Pharaoh's army. (Exodus 14)�After Joshuas army marches around the walled city of Jericho for six straight days and then marches around it seven times on the seventh day, the walls come tumbling down. (Joshua 6)
* When Daniel's friends are thrown into a furnace so hot that the flames consume the guards who throw them in, the friends walk around and emerge unharmed. (Daniel 3)
* After Jesus dies a horrible death on a cross and is placed in a tomb where the entrance is blocked by a heavy stone, on the third day he rises from the dead and appears to many. (Matthew 27-28; Mark 15-16; Luke 23-24; John 19-21)
But what marvelous things has God done lately? Why should we sing him a new song? It depends on what you consider marvelous.
David certainly had seen some amazing things, starting as a teenager when he killed the giant Goliath with a slingshot. But in Psalm 139, David marvels at himself. He sees his body—every part of it, how all the parts work together in harmony, and the simple fact that he moves, breathes, and is alive-as a miracle.
He is fearfully and wonderfully made by a God, who has loved him and cared about him since before he was born.
David was a marvelous thing, created by God. And so are you!.
