Rest in Peace, Deacon Walter Noel Breland! Throughout his ministry, he served at several locations, including Our Lady of Perpetual Help, St. Thomas the Apostle, St. John of the Cross in Orange Grove, and St. Pius X in Sandia. He was one of the last members of the first class of deacons ordained for the Diocese after this practice was reinstated at the Second Vatican Council. Please keep his family in your prayers during this difficult time!
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 29, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mathis.

The Board of Directors of Catholic Charities of Corpus Christi and Mother Teresa Shelter is pleased to announce the appointment of Kathy Pekar as Executive Director. Pekar has served as Interim Executive Director since November 2025 and now assumes the role permanently.
Pekar brings five years of dedicated service to Catholic Charities and Mother Teresa Shelter, having held several leadership roles, including Director of Operations. In that role, she demonstrated exceptional operational expertise and a deep understanding of the agency’s mission, staff, and the community it serves.
“Over the past several months, Kathy has provided steady leadership and a clear vision during a time of transition,” said Mike Schmidt, President of the Board of Directors. “Her commitment to our mission, combined with her operational strength and care for both our clients and staff, made her the clear choice to lead the organization forward. We are confident that under her leadership, Catholic Charities and Mother Teresa Shelter will continue to grow in service to our community.”
As Executive Director, Pekar will oversee the organization’s programs and operations, continuing to advance its mission of serving those in need with compassion, dignity, and respect.
“I am deeply humbled and grateful to be entrusted with the role of Executive Director of Catholic Charities of Corpus Christi and the Mother Teresa Shelter,” said Pekar. “This opportunity is truly a blessing. I am privileged to serve alongside an incredible staff whose compassion, faith, and dedication to serving others inspire me every single day. I am sincerely thankful for the trust and support of Bishop Avilés and our committed Board of Directors. Together, with our staff, we will continue to carry forward the mission of the Church and respond to the needs of our community with love, dignity, and hope.”

Let’s Brighten Our Community: The Spring edition of this service retreat for teens brought them to serve in different ways. One group cleaned up the Holy Cross Cemetery, another one played Bingo with residents at a nursing home. Some went to clean up a part of a beach on Mustang Island, collecting more than 12 bags of trash. Another group baked cookies, made cards, and brought them to the families at the Ronald McDonald House. The playground at St Patrick Catholic School got some care, too! The day ended bringing everything back to Him - with confessions and adoration! Until the next one!
