THE 10 COMMANDMENTS: SIMPLY EXPLAINED
Many people hear about the Ten Commandments and think of them as strict laws, things you must not do. But in truth, they are much deeper than that. They are God’s loving guidance -showing us how to live in right relationship with Him and with one another.
They are not chains... they are direction.
1. I AM THE LORD YOUR GOD: YOU SHALL NOT HAVE OTHER GODS BEFORE ME
This commandment calls us to put God first above everything - above money, success, relationships, or anything that can take His place in our hearts. It is about loyalty, trust, and recognizing that God alone is the source of life (cf. Book of Exodus 20:2–3).
What you place first, shapes your life.
2. YOU SHALL NOT TAKE THE NAME OF THE LORD IN VAIN
God’s name is holy, and it should be spoken with respect, not carelessly or in anger. This includes avoiding blasphemy, false oaths, or using God’s name to justify wrong actions.
How you speak of God, reveals how you see Him.
3. REMEMBER TO KEEP THE LORD’S DAY HOLY
This commandment invites us to dedicate time to God, especially through worship. For Christians, this is fulfilled in Sunday Mass -a time not just to rest physically, but to renew spiritually.
If you don’t make time for God, other things will take His place.
4. HONOUR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER
This goes beyond childhood obedience. It calls for respect, gratitude, and care for parents and authority. It also extends to building strong families and honoring relationships.
The way you treat authority, shapes the way you live in society.
5. YOU SHALL NOT KILL
Human life is sacred from beginning to natural end. This commandment protects life -not only physically, but also in how we treat others with dignity, avoiding hatred, violence, or harm.
To value life, is to reflect God’s heart.
6. YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY
This commandment protects the sanctity of marriage and calls for purity and faithfulness. It is about honoring love as something sacred, not something to be used or broken.
True love is faithful, not temporary.
7. YOU SHALL NOT STEAL
We are called to respect what belongs to others and to live with honesty and justice. This includes fairness in work, business, and everyday dealings.
Integrity is doing right, even when no one is watching.
8. YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS
Truth matters. This commandment forbids lying, gossip, and harming others through false words. It calls us to be people of honesty and trust.
Your words can build, or destroy.
9. YOU SHALL NOT COVET YOUR NEIGHBOUR’S WIFE
This goes deeper than actions -it addresses desires. It teaches us to guard our hearts and respect the dignity of others, especially in relationships.
What you desire, influences what you become.
10. YOU SHALL NOT COVET YOUR NEIGHBOUR’S GOODS
This commandment challenges envy and greed. It teaches contentment and gratitude, reminding us that peace comes not from having more, but from appreciating what we have.
Gratitude brings peace, envy steals it.
IN SUMMARY: A PATH TO TRUE FREEDOM
The Ten Commandments are not just rules...
*They are a path to freedom
*A guide to love God and neighbor
*A foundation for a meaningful life
When lived sincerely, they do not restrict you, They shape you into who God created you to be
Today, reflect:
“Do I see God’s commandments as restrictions or as guidance?”
“God’s commandments are not burdens, they are signposts to life.”
If this helped simplify things, share it and tell us: which commandment challenges you the most?
