Discipleship Matters 40 Day Lenten Devotional- Day #40
Living with forever in mind!
Revelation 7:9-12
After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying: “Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!”
Learning to live with a kingdom mentality means learning to live with forever in mind. When Jesus’ kingdom comes in fullness, life on Earth will be as it is in heaven. Which begs the question: What is heaven like? Here In Revelation 7:9-12, the Bible makes three clear statements about what heaven is like.
First, countless people from all over the world live together (Revelation 7:9). What an amazing image! We will stand in a crowd of people from nations we’ve never even heard of before. It will be uncommon unity in its most perfect form.
Second, everyone is united in worship (Revelation 7:10). Though we will all differ when it comes to where we lived or how we were raised, we will be united in how we worship God as we proclaim, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”
Finally, in heaven, we will share the same passion (Revelation 7:9-12). Here on Earth, we’re easily consumed with whether we are right and who owes us an apology. But in heaven, we will stand alongside angels, in the presence of God, and glorify the Lord. In heaven, we will not worry about who should have apologized or whether we are successful. Instead, we will be consumed with our worship for the Lord. And in that worship, we will be united as one people whose ultimate goal is to give God all the honor and glory and praise.
Revelation reminds us that having a kingdom mentality has a lot less to do with having answers, and a lot more to do with having the right attitude. When we’re living with forever in mind, our lives are marked by forever stuff: humility, unity, and love.
Eternal God, I pray that as we live our finale days on this earth that we live with a kingdom mentality preparing ourselves for eternity not only in how we think but in also how we operate on a day-to-day basis. I pray that we won’t waste our time, energy, and effort on things that won’t last forever. In Jesus name, Amen.
