“When He had come back to Capernaum several days afterward, it was heard that He was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room, not even near the door; and He was speaking the word to them. And they came, bringing to Him a paralytic, carried by four men. Being unable to get to Him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above Him; and when they had dug an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic was lying. And Jesus seeing their faith, said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” But some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God alone?” Immediately Jesus, aware in His spirit that they were reasoning that way within themselves, said to them, “Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven’; or to say, ‘Get up, and pick up your pallet and walk’? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the paralytic, “I say to you, get up, pick up your pallet and go home.” And he got up and immediately picked up the pallet and went out in the sight of everyone, so that they were all amazed and were glorifying God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this.”’
Mark 2:1-12 NASB1995
In this story, Jesus reveals His Deity – God incarnate – and His purpose in coming. Nestled in this story is a beautiful revelation of the privilege we have to approach God to ask for spiritual and physical healing.
First, we see Jesus inside a house teaching and a great multitude of people gathered around listening to Him. Note that wherever Jesus goes, He is preaching and teaching. He has only a short time to proclaim His message to the people, and He doesn’t waste time on the trivial things in this world. He is the perfect example for us to follow. People responded by listening to Him and that’s why we see always great multitude gathering around Him.
Next, we are told that four men bring a paralytic man to be healed by the Master. At first, they can’t reach Jesus because of the crowd and the people around Him. This is our experience as Christians when we try to lead a person to Christ. People will try to prevent that person to come to Christ. We can see this happening to us when we try to win people to Christ and the opposition we experience from friends and relatives.
The four men are not deterred, however. They go to the roof and remove whatever obstacle they can to bring the paralytic directly to Jesus. They know what is really preventing this man to come to Christ is not men on the ground, but barriers from all around – as Paul in Ephesians 6:12 says, “For our struggle is not with flesh and blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the powers against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in heavenly places”.
The author of this book was very careful in mentioning four people in specific that carried the sick man, if it is less than four there will be imbalance and the mission will fail. There are four elements that make our mission effective reaching and bringing people to Christ. First, sharing the gospel with unbeliever. Paul in Romans 10:14 “How will they believe in Him whom they not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?” Second, our conduct as Christians must reflect our message. The world can easily discern whether we practice what we preach. Thirdly, prayer – praying for people to get saved, asking God for His blessing, and remembering that all provision comes from the Lord. And finally, the fourth element and the cornerstone of our outreach, the work of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes we think our arguments and our knowledge will convince and bring people to Christ. Never! It is only the work of the Holy Spirit alone. Paul reminds us this in 1 Thessalonians 1:5 – “For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and full conviction.” It is the work of the Holy Spirit that convicts and opens the eyes of the unbeliever.
In the next phase of the story, we see the sick man in front of Jesus face to face. It is as if everything has now vanished and the paralytic is alone with the Savior. At this moment Christ reveals two of the most important facts in Christianity. Firstly, His Deity that He is God the incarnate, for only God can forgive sins. The second, Christ alone is the vehicle for the forgiveness of sin. Nothing and no one else is needed.
Also note that Jesus dealt first with his spiritual healing before the physical healing. The scribes start complaining about Christ’s forgiveness, but Jesus; answer was a true revelation of His sacrificial work on the cross, saying, “Which is easier, to say your sins are forgiven, or to say pick up your pallet and walk?” Yes, it would be much easier for God through Jesus Christ to heal, because He is the Creator. But it is much harder to say your sins are forgiven, because that requires the Son to become a man, die on the cross and be separated from the Father in order for the sins of the human race to be forgiven.
The last phase of the story is the physical healing of the paralytic man. “Jesus said to the man “I say to you, get up, pick up your pallet and go home”. He got up and immediately picked up the pallet and went out in sight of everyone, so that they were all amazed and were glorifying God.” This the true conversion, not the circumstances and your old habits and behaviors to carry and control you and make paralyzed and keep you from not walking. Now as a new creation in Christ we are able to walk with our pallets in our hand. We are in control through the power that was given to us through Jesus. People saw this amazing change and they started glorifying God. So to through our testimony God will be Glorified!
To God be all the Glory for this Amazing Grace.
