He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him.

Isaiah 53:2b

When God sent His Son to be the biggest star the world’s stage has ever known, it’s interesting that He chose for Him to look very ordinary – not like the beautiful faces splashed across our tv screens, movies, and social media. In fact, according to our Scripture reference today, Jesus wasn’t much to look at. That might be a surprise to some as they think about the Son of God, but God sought to identify with the majority of us. Sure, there are a few handsome men and beautiful women out there, but there sure are a lot more of us ordinary-looking folks!

That was Jesus in His earthly ministry. What does He look like now, seated at the right hand of God in heaven? The Bible tells us that Jesus gave a sneak peak of His full glory to three of His closest disciples. Leading them up high on a mountain Jesus was “…transfigured before them; and His face shown like the sun, and His garments became as white as light.”

So, here’s the good news for today: One day, Jesus will return and we will all easily recognize Him as the Son of God. And more good news for those who trust in Him is that we, too, will receive new bodies -perfect bodies – that never get sick and tired, that never age and die. Like Jesus, our new bodies will be dazzling. And we ordinary folks will be eternally grateful.

And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests who bear the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, that the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off, the waters that come down from upstream, and they shall stand as a heap. - Joshua 3:13

Faith requires action.

If you’re of the opinion that to have faith means you can just sit back and let God take care of things, then you have been seriously misled. Think about it. After 40 years, the children of Israel had been led out of the wilderness and then found themselves on the banks of a swollen Jordan River. The Promised Land was just on the other side. Oh, so close, yet so far away! There was a huge obstacle separating them from the blessing God had promised. Standing on the bank of the raging river, wringing their hands, and praying would not solve their problem. They had to act.

But it wasn’t really the river that was stopping them from crossing – it was their lack of FAITH. It was not until, in faith, they stepped into the turbulent waters that the river separated and the people walked into the Promised Land on dry land.

So it is with our lives. Obstacles separate us from God’s richest blessings. To simply have faith that God will provide a way doesn’t always make a way. To stand by until God makes a way obvious may cause us to delay His blessing.

It takes both faith and action to experience God’s best. Get out there and see what God has in store for you – in faith.

Then the multitude came together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread. But when His own people heard about this, they went out to lay hold of Him, for they said, “He is out of His mind.”

Mark 3:20-21

Opposition. It’s one of the realities of following Jesus. Sometimes it comes from co-workers and other times from friends. Quite often, the greatest source of hostility can come from family. Jesus understood this all too well, as many of His earliest critics were family members.

Mark sets the scene in chapter 3: “He (Jesus) came home.” At this point in Jesus’ ministry, home was Capernaum, the small town just north of the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus had created quite the buzz thanks to His powerful anointed teaching and undeniable miracles. With few doctors and only very primitive understandings of medicine, people flocked to Jesus for healing. The need was great.

Jesus’ family lived about 20 miles away in Nazareth. As stories of Jesus’ ministry spread, they began to worry about Him. To His brothers, Jesus was a carpenter and their respected eldest brother – nothing more. When Jesus began calling Himself God and forgiving sins, His family wondered what had happened to the Jesus they knew growing up. The successful carpenter had become a radical preacher. Had He lost His mind? They simply could not understand. Eventually, some of His family would choose to believe Jesus. But can you imagine what it would take to believe that your seemingly ordinary brother was the Son of God?

Is your family opposing or mocking your faith in Christ? The good news is that Jesus understands. Jesus gets it because He lived it – all the way to the cross. In the end, Jesus overcame all the critics by rising from the dead! No matter what opposition you are facing for your faith, Jesus understands. You can be sure that He’ll walk with you through whatever comes your way.

“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.‘”

Isaiah 30:21b

When you receive a “calling” from God, is it a physical thing? Do you actually hear His voice? Most of the time when God calls us to move in a particular direction, we experience a sense of strong inner leading. I remember wrestling with the decision to leave the business world and move into full-time Christian ministry. I didn’t know exactly what that would look like, but I felt an inner sense that God wanted me to take that step away from the familiar and move into the unknown.

Stepping into God’s calling for your life can be very uncomfortable because it forces us to depend 100 percent on God. As we move out of our comfort zone and into the unknown, we MUST lean on God. We have no other choice. The Bible is full of stories where men and women step into a calling they didn’t quite understand. Sometimes they felt under-qualified. Other times, the call just seemed illogical. Yet time and time again when they said “Yes,” God showed up.

Is God asking you to step into a different place in your life? Maybe it’s trusting Him with a career change, starting a family, or beginning to serve in ministry. Whatever it is, trust that when you say “Yes” to God, He will show you which way to go.
